Yesterday’s quiz was an exceedingly tricky one, I’ll admit. I even got confused a time or two and had to go back and check my notes and/or Google. Anyway, here are the answers, along with additional information or context.

Jonathan Edwards or Death Metal?

1.
I can hear the whispers
of the demons poisoning his mind

“More blood,” they say

“More lives”

Answer: Death Metal. These are lyrics from the Profugus Mortis song “Last Pain.”

2.
their damnation don’t slumber
the pit is prepared
the fire is made ready

the furnace is now hot

Answer: Edwards. Context from the sermon: “The wrath of God burns against them, their damnation does not slumber; the pit is prepared, the fire is made ready, the furnace is now hot, ready to receive them; the flames do now rage and glow. The glittering sword is whet, and held over them, and the pit hath opened its mouth under them.”

3.
endure hardships as discipline
to strengthen your heart

stand tall and head strong

Answer: Death Metal. It totally sounds like something a preacher (or the Apostle Paul) might say, but these are lyrics from the Profugus Mortis song “The Darkest Hour.” Tricky!

4.
the illusion of strength
is quickly dispelled

as it’s all destroyed

with whisper and breath

Answer: Death Metal. Lyrics from the Profugus Mortis song “The Beauty of This Form.”

5.
the arrows of death
fly unseen at noonday
the sharpest sight

cannot discern them

Answer: Edwards. “The arrows of death fly unseen at noon-day; the sharpest sight cannot discern them. God has so many different unsearchable ways of taking wicked men out of the world and sending them to hell, that there is nothing to make it appear, that God had need to be at the expense of a miracle, or go out of the ordinary course of his providence, to destroy any wicked man, at any moment.

6.
there is nothing
between you and hell

but the air

Answer: Edwards. “There is the dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God; there is hell’s wide gaping mouth open; and you have nothing to stand upon, nor any thing to take hold of; there is nothing between you and hell but the air; it is only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds you up.”

7.
haste and escape
for your lives

look not behind you…
lest you be consumed

Answer: Edwards. This is the very last paragraph of the Sinners in the Hands… sermon: “Therefore, let every one that is out of Christ, now awake and fly from the wrath to come. The wrath of Almighty God is now undoubtedly hanging over a great part of this congregation. Let every one fly out of Sodom: ‘Haste and escape for your lives, look not behind you, escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed.’ “

8.
the heart is now a sink of sin
so if sin was not restrained

it would immediately
turn
the soul into a fiery oven

Answer: Edwards. The corruption of the heart of man is immoderate and boundless in its fury; and while wicked men live here, it is like fire pent up by God’s restraints, whereas if it were let loose, it would set on fire the course of nature; and as the heart is now a sink of sin, so if sin was not restrained, it would immediately turn the soul into fiery oven, or a furnace of fire and brimstone.

Sidenote: If I were a kitchen remodeler, I would probably say no if a homeowner asked me to install a sink of sin.

9.
your body is filled with fire
your heart is filled with ice

you never cared for others
so you will die alone

Answer: Death Metal. Lyrics from the Profugus Mortis song, “Upon the Raging Storm.”

10.
vile human, the world it weeps
on your existence

at just the sight of you

Answer: Death Metal. Lyrics from the Profugus Mortis song, “Vile.”
