French play depicts Jesus as “madman, dog, pyromaniac, messiah of AIDS, terrorist”

Christian groups are condemning a Spanish play about Jesus called “Golgota Picnic,” scheduled to premiere in France.

However, at least one reviewer said the play, which features full nudity, becomes tedious and boring — such as a long scene in which a middle-aged, naked actor plays a Haydn selection on an upright piano. Another referred to scenes as “trashy.”

A scene in the play

A senior Catholic cleric, Bishop Dominique Rey of Frejus-Toulon, denounced playwright Rodrigo Garcia’s depiction of Christ as “madman, dog, pyromaniac, messiah of Aids, devil-whore, no better than a terrorist.”

The play, which features full nudity, is scheduled to debut in Toulouse where Archbishop Monsignor Robert Le Gall told the BBC that  Garcia “wants to denounce forcefully all forms of fundamentalism and rebel against an all-powerful God.”

Le Gall said the play “fouled the faith of many believers” and does not depict the “God Christians proclaim.”

Delighted with the publicity, the play’s Argentine-born author said he found it “healthy” when people took a stand. The  manager of the the Garonne Theatre where the play will be performed, Jacky Ohayon, insisted the play was not blasphemous and said it had run for six months in Madrid “with no trouble.”

It received lukewarm reviews in Madrid. Antonio Castro in the daily Madridiario.com said the play attempts to “surprise, shock and revolutionize educate the public,” but becomes tedious. French drama critic Matthieu Mégevand  in the Paris daily Le Monde noted “the show depicts the Last Supper and the crucifixion of Christ in a trashy version.”

“Is it right to foul the faith of many believers, to attack them in their devotion to Christ?” asked Le Gall. “I do not think so.”

A bid by Catholic groups to have the play banned was rejected by the regional authorities in Toulouse

Satan used people to attack Jesus when he walked the Earth and he continues to attack Him today. Satan made sure he was killed and no doubt rejoiced in His death, believing that He had stopped Him from Gods work. But guess what HE rose again and defeated the powers in hell by taking the keys to hell and death and He continues to reveal His power today. Satan will always use people to attack God and His work but God will always have the last say because He is God and satan is a fallen angel. They can hardly compare. This play will be forgotten in time but the Word of God lives on.

very sad. maybe the world is moving away from Godliness to materialistic. but to stoop so low to make money is very cheap and is something shocking and stupid. the labourers at Railway Stations may be poor but are honourable; but the creator of this play comes across as a prostitute who will sellf himself and his soul to create wealth and his work itself reflects his personality.

I await this “playwright’s” attempt at doing a trashy version of Muhammed’s life. Perhaps he will, if he’s “brave enough” to do it, solve many problems in the world all at once.

Why ban it just don’t go. A ban, picketting and interveiws just prompt the public into going to see what all the talk is about. It may not make a nickles worth of difference but I don’t pay to see any thing with Jane Fonda and several other extremist liberals in them. Who does it hurt? Most certainly not myself, I still have my dollar.

It is sad & deplorable that in this world so much evil is prevelant and people want easy fame & money in even causing pain to religious ethics. We are a peace loving Community and our Religion taeches us to Love and Forgive even when hurt or caused pain. At times I am amused how the Islamist radicals go about destroying and hurting people when small things happen.
We on the other hand profess Love & Kindness in such circumstances … that is why Our God Is a Merciful Savior and very soon the whole of Mankind will realize this Truth. May he be forgiven for this Blasphemous actions to Our LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Love and Kindness? Read accounts of the crusades… I am a Christian, but just the same, I’m ashamed at what people through the ages have done in the name of God to their fellow man.

This is all to be expected. In the last days many will fall away and plays like this one are just part of that taking place. Attacking Jesus and Christians has become sport for those that do not believe and those that hate G/D. Pray that we are the last generation that will have to suffer persecution for what we believe and pray for them that do not believe that Jesus will touch their lives and bring them to Himself.

How right you are, Heather. These people are treeding on dangerous ground. They are boarding on the unpardonable sin because not only are they blaspheming God, but letting him know they hate him. This is not good…they could well lose their eternal lives over this.

I hope the theater owners in America will stop this movie before it gets to our shores. What gives them [The producers of this filt] the right to attack our Lord Jesus Christ?

Christianity is too loving to condemn as violently well as Islam. Otherwise, except in the parlor of closeted fear, such a play would have never have survived.

Those who hate the Lord, those who deny the Lord, those who hate those of us who love the Lord….. they are so loud, and always seem to insult anyone who believes. It’s funny that those same people always seem to be the ones who argue the we should be tolerant of all, and they seem to be the ones who bend backward to justify the criminals in our society, the criminals in the world who plant bombs that kill innocent people, then defend those who come from the Middle East to destroy. I guess, though, that’s really to be expected.

People like the author of that blasphemy are nothing more than loud followers of Satan. They have already sealed their fate.

Ignore the “play”… let those who will never see Heaven love their hate.

And meanwhile, while we are persecuted for our faith in Jesus Christ, remember what Jesus said in the Beatitudes…

Terrible travesty of justice by Western politicians who allow Christ’s holy name to be so insulted but yet would instantly punish anyone who dares to say anything against Islam or the other religions.

Would this fellow have the guts to write a similar play about Mohammed?
