Conservative pioneer fund-raiser calls for boycott of annual Catholic offering

posted by

Conservative icon Richard Viguerie is irked with the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

He’s annoyed enough that he’s launched a nationwide campaign calling on fellow Catholics to withhold their annual gifts — usually collected on the third weekend of November.

Richard Viguerie

At 78 years old, Viguerie is credited with creating the conservative coalition that elected Ronald Reagan and both Presidents Bush. It could be said he invented direct-mail fund-raising in the 1960s and 1970s. He was the brains behind Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority. His marriage of grassroots fund-raising and conservative politics brought evangelical Christians into the political process as never before in American history. George Magazine once wrote that his entering politics was one of the “defining political moments of the 20th century.”

He has been credited with helping a variety of conservative organizations grow powerful and get involved in political activism, think tanks, publications and election of candidates to the U.S. House and Senate, state legislatures and governors’ mansions. The Washington Post called him the “conservatives’ Voice of America.” The Washington Times listed him as one of 13 “Conservatives of the Century.”

Now he’s irked and is urging fellow Catholics nationwide to ignore appeals this weekend from their

Imagine synagogues across America holding collections to help alleviate poverty, but unknowingly funding anti-Semitic activities.

Imagine again black churches raising money to help stop community crime, but instead the money is surreptitiously used to fund white supremacist groups.

Unthinkable? This is exactly what happens every third weekend in November across most of America’s Catholic churches. People give money to the CCHD so they in turn give it to community organizers that undermine our Catholic values and beliefs.

As a former CCHD insider, I can attest that what Mr. Viguerie is absolutely true.

“If some Catholics (clergy & laity) feel called to support some secular social justice causes that are not in line with Catholic moral values and authentic Catholic social justice, so be it. That will be between that individual and God,but quit using our churches and unsuspecting parishioners to continue to fund a program that is so corrupt.”

Ah. Viguerie objects to the efforts of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development–because it comes too close to the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (the Anglican Church of Canada’s principal charity for social justice in the developing world, and thus a sister organization to CCHD) for his liking. Maybe he’s starting to figure out that allegiance with Catholics on abortion doesn’t mean they will support other parts of the Republican platform, hmm?

I’m on board, and it’s about time to bring an end to CCHD.
