Complaint says crosses at Catholic school offensive, prevent Muslim prayers

Crosses in every room at Washingon D.C.’s Catholic University of America are a human rights violation that prevent Muslim students from praying.

That’s the complaint to the Washington, D.C. Office of Human Rights filed by a professor from rival George Washington University across town.

GWU Law School Professor John Banzhaf takes the Catholic institution to task for acting “probably with malice” against Muslim students in a 60-page complaint that cites “offensive” Catholic imagery all over the Catholic school, which he says hinder Muslims from praying.

Baffled Catholic University officials say they have never received a complaint from any of the schools Muslim students.

Banzhaf, who already has a pending lawsuit against the university over ending its policy of allowing mixed-gender dormitories and has a history of filing civil rights suits on such topics as childhood obesity and smoking, filed the complaint alleging that Muslim students are not given their own prayer rooms.

He alleges that the university, “does not provide space – as other universities do – for the many daily prayers Muslim students must make, forcing them instead to find temporarily empty classrooms where they are often surrounded by Catholic symbols which are incongruous to their religion,” according to the Tower, Catholic University’s student newspaper.

The complaint further objects that Muslims must pray at the school’s chapels “and at the cathedral that looms over the entire campus – the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.”

A spokesperson for the human rights office said they are investigating Banzhaf’s complaint — and the inquiry could take as long as six months.

“This attorney is really turning civil rights on its head,” observed Patrick Reilly of the Cardinal Newman Socity. “He’s using the law for his own discrimination against the Catholic institution and essentially saying Catholic University cannot operate according to Catholic principles.”

The complaint is absurd, writes Thomas Peters on the website CatholicVote.

“Can you imagine a law professor helping Catholic students to sue a Jewish or Muslim school to demand that the schools install crosses, remove their religious symbols, and allow the Catholics to construct a chapel on their property?” wrote Peters. “Can you imagine the argument being that Jewish and Muslims schools using their religious symbols and following their faith traditions would be described in the legal brief as “offensive”?!

“Normally I would have confidence that this lawsuit will be deemed without merit, but the way things are going these days, I just can’t be sure anymore. Simply incredible.”

Is it not a Catholic school — Hello — Go to a Muslim school and be happy — And are they not stepping on Christians rights to freedom of Religion –

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment RedHogg

They come to America and trying to change things. They go to a Christian school and complain about it being Christian.

Muslims seem to be trying real hard to use our laws to defeat us in their ignorance.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment TwyliteFlyer

Wow. This is seriously a case of some A$$hat doing whatever he can to get his name in the paper. He needs to get a life.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Jason Prichard`

yes, and we keep bending over backwards to accomodate these people. This country is falling to these people and that is exactly their plan. The state prison system in Ohio has had to remove pork from its meals because it could possibly come in contact with a Muslims INMATES food.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Kevin

Watch this on Fox right now. The individual filing this lawsuit needs to be sued. This is a legal farce.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Rick

I am not Catholic and am happy to defend the university. This is an absolutely ridiculous complaint. You don’t like the crucixes, go to another school or pray somewhere else. If this was a complaint from catholic students at a private muslim university I would feel the same way.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Linda

I think that it is only reasonable to expect that if you go to a private, religious school, you should expect to see religious icons. If you don’t like it, go to a muslim school. It is time that this nation stand for religious freedom. That is not what the religion of islam teaches. When will we say, Enough?!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Kim

I hope this really does not go anywhere. They knew the decor before the registered. Do not back down! If we give in to this they will slowly take away every aspect of our beliefs and practices. They are allowed theirs why are we persecuted for ours!!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Canon Alberic

I hope that CUA fights this stupid lawsuit as hard as it possibly can. If these heathens want to attend a Catholic university, they need to expect certain things, and they need to adhere to University policies. If they don’t like it, they can go to a Public university where idiotic “racially discriminatory” whinings are actually taken seriously by the politically correct crowd. I will be hugely disappointed if the university gives in to this lawsuit and this moron of a “professor”

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment vanessa

Here’s an idea: Don’t go to a Catholic University if Christianity is offensive to you.

  • Ralph Vaughan

Silly Moslems! Stealth jihads are supposed to be stealthy, not stupid. You should take a few pages from CAIR’s playbook…that way, not only would the university not feel the knife go in, they wouldn’t have a clue until blindsided by attorneys from the DOJ’s Sharia Law Division. Seems like you have a dunce for a lawyer.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment bob johnson

I don’t know if Professor John Banzhaf is Muslim or not, he definitely does not go to school there. So there should not be any comments about Muslims complaining about this. There should be lots of comments about an attorney trying to tell a private religious college not to offend anybody at the college with their religious practices.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment A Son of Liberty

In case they are not aware this is a catholic school. Cartholic schools have crosses, pictures of our Lord Jesus Christ.
If they want to find a place to pray then find one but leave the crosses and pictures alone! And if they do not like it then “LEAVE”!
    GOD Save the Republic!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Chris

Absolutely incredulous. I believe in equal rights and the fact that there is a lawsuit for this is an insult to the intelligence of people.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment LutheranChik

First of all: Folks, please re-read the article. Some nefarious cabal of jihadist Muslim students isn’t driving this complaint about the Christian visual art at the university — it’s a grandstanding, frivolous-lawsuit-mongering non-Muslim attorney at another university. Xenophobic much?

Secondly: There are many reasons why students might want to study at private universities whose faith traditions are not their own. As most commenters have noted/alluded to, these students know what they’re getting into when they enroll and don’t need to be legally “protected” from exposure to that institution’s religious roots.

Finally: I can’t speak for all church-sponsored colleges or universities, but many of them, aware that some of their student body are persons of other faiths, make accomodations for them of one kind or another — recognizing their student organizations, offering meeting space, working with students whose religious observances conflict with, say, exam schedules to make alternate arrangements, and so forth. That’s just hospitality to “the stranger,” which I seem to remember some guy named Jesus indicating he wanted his friends to demonstrate on his behalf.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Lara Stephens

Can’t believe this! Why go to the school if it offends you? I think this lawyer is nuts. This should never be allowed to go any further.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Allan

I find the Muslims complaint rediculous. Catholic University is a Catholic school. What part of “Catholic” don’t they understand? 40+ years ago I received my masters from DePaul University, after having attended all public schools and state universities. I found the crucifix in every room to be comforting. The crucifix just hangs there; it does not threaten anyone.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment dwzw

when they applied did they somehow fail to notice the name CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY on the application? because the fact that they are seeking higher education there seems to be somehow incongruent if they find it offensive- it may also imply that they have yet to master their basic education as well if they never took these things into account until now

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Rayna

None of the Muslim students have made ANY complaints so why are people turning against them? It was one man who made an assumption about them, and now they are being called ridiculous?? THEY DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG!!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Frankenstein

Racism, xenophobia, and religious intolerance are Christian values? That’s what I’m seeing from the comments here. Appalling. If you are swearing, judging people, and being an all out jerk, you ARE NOT A CHRISTIAN. I know God isn’t real, and I’M a better Christian than you! That’s pretty sad.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Tamme

A Catholic University should have crosses. I would be offended if they were taken down. I am not even a Catholic but I am a Christian. As a Christian I have the right to see crosses, to hear church bells and to give a prayer of thanks in restaurants, which I do. If a Muslim – or any faith for that matter – would like to attend a Catholic Univeristy…why not? What better way is there to bring them to Christ.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Marge

If the crosses offend other religions then they do not belong in a Catholic University. People are trying to take Christ out of Christmas to. Why don’t people leave us Catholics a lone. This lawyer should not be able to go any further.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment bstee

This has nothing to do with any student going to the university. Not a single student has complained or made such an allegation. This law professor simply does this to gain publicity. He also sued MCDonalds for “pre-frying” french fries (and won millions). For all the possible just causes in the world, you feel the need to pick this? And the really sad part is, it is working. We are giving him free publicity, and so many on here have jumped into post that the “Muslim Students” are rediculous and when they applied they should have known…does anyone even know if there are practicing Muslim students attending the school? I suspect if they are practicing they are not attending this school. I can tell you, I personally would not attend a Muslim school (though I respect their rights to have one). I would not bow down to any but Christ Jesus. I suspect they would have similar views.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Ei

This is a non issue and the lawyer should never take this case. Only Christians should attend a Catholic school. Any one who doesn’t believe in these principals doesn’t belong there. We should not change the Christian principles on which this country was founded for anyone!!!!!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Dr.L

I am a professor at a Catholic college and it is enriching to all students ( and faculty)to have classmates from all different faiths and cultures. We make certain accommodations such as excused absences for religious holydays and space for gathering for students of other faiths. We do NOT, in any way, diminish our Catholic orientation or symbols.
No Muslim students are complaining at Catholic U. It is the action of an ego-maniacal American attorney.

PROFESSOR NAJEEBA SYEED-MILLER from Lincoln said “The diversity of humankind is not a curse from God. The program describes itself as America’s first interreligious school of theology, one that will train pastors, rabbis, and eventually Muslim imams all on one campus. The school’s philosophy was captured in the opening remarks above are of Muslim-American religious scholar Najeeba Syeed-Miller, a professor at Claremont Lincoln.

  • http://Disbelief Susan

I can not believe this is even happening. This is a PRIVATE Catholic School. They have the right to display relics anywhere they chose. If Muslims are offended by this then they should pick a different university. Furthermore, Muslims are not filing this lawsuit, our government is. There is where the shame lies. I can not believe our country has come to this.

When Catholic parents send their children to a Catholic school, it’s partly to learn the religion, not to be ashamed of their religious heritage and symbols, to apologize for being Catholic.
BYU does not have mixed-gender dormitories. And, hey, not a crucifix in sight. Perhaps the offended Muslims ought to give Utah a try.

It is unbelievable that this would not be a frivolous complaint. Why in the first place would a Muslim student choose a Catholic University for their higher education? This is human rights taken too far! You are right that if a Catholic student went to a Muslim university and filled a suit citing the same offensive signs and symbols of the Muslim faith, that person would be called crazy for going to a Muslim school expecting no visible signs of religion. Shaking my head in disbelief, how far do we bend over backward to protect rights before it just become contortion?

  • http://Righttothepoint Nickie Stevens

No one anywhere said that Muslims must attend this school or any other ‘private’ University. If Muslims don’t like what they hear and see, let them go else where. But I suspect that it isn’t the Muslim students who don’t like the school because I believe they do. I believe the problem is with the attorney who claims to represent the Msulim students who is causing all the problems.

Apparently, the Muslims like the school or else they would never have gone there in the first place. They knew that this school, like all Catholic schools, are a in a ‘Catholic Way.’ Perhaps it is some radical trouble making Muslims who are reatining the lawyer.

I am not Catholic, but am a Christian. As many have stated, this article and lawsuit has nothing to do (so far) with complaints from any Muslim students at Catholic University. It is a frivilous-lawsuit happy lawyer drumming up unsupported charges, trying to continue to make a name for himself under the guise of some sort of religious freedom or civil rights violation at CU. If the judge that hears or reads this charge has any common sense, it will be thrown out immediately!

Why are the muslims going to a Catholic University? I’m not catholic, but out of respect for Jesus we really shouldn’t display crosses, that’s kind of arrogant. Let our actions show what kind of faith we have, it will either be a saving faith or a dead faith. Muslims pray to a false god, they have a dead faith, a born again saint prays to the heavenly Father in Jesus’ name, this is a saving faith.

Islam needs reformation very badly, rather then whitewashing in America and pretending to be a “peaceful religion”. Nothing could be further from truth! Koran and Hadith are filled with hateful statements against the Jews, Christians and “infidels”.

In the past Jews and Christians were able to live in Muslim countries as second-hand citizens, dhimmis, who had to pay special tax. There are no Jews left in the Arab world and very few in any Muslim country since Islamists have had pogroms when Israel was formed. There were more Jewish refugees who fled Muslim countries into Israel then Muslims who fled Israel in and around 1948. Those were settled in Israel and Palestinians are used as a pawn to rile up Muslim mobs around the world against the Jews.

Now Christians are suffering the same fate in most Muslims countries, which underwent Jasmin “revolution” only to see rise of Muslim Brotherhood, an intolerant and violent group that is into grab for power and wants to impose strict sharia on everybody. Sharia is incompatible with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and all those countries practicing sharia should be expelled from UN since they do not belong to the family of civilized humans.

Muslims in the US who think that they can use our laws to impose their medieval religion and its intolerance should to to countries where they are free to practice such “justice” and stop bothering regular Americans. The Ground Zero Mosque is an affront to human freedom and humanity!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Gretchen

Absolutely ridiculous!!!!!! The Muslims are free to go to a school that practices their beliefs – you do not change a Catholic school for a few – sort of like a bully in the schoolyard wanting all the kids to think, act and do as he wants!!! Plain stupidy!!!!!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Donald

When I read this first in the news and later here I was still stunned.
    1) Is this Catholic School a public university or private. If it is private, then people don’t have to go there. If they do, it is common sense that they would accept the entire package, including crosses, and Catholic theology.
    2) I really don’t understand that now, suddenly there is malice toward Muslems. This university has been around for many, many years. Having taught in a private Catholic high school, I’m sure no one sat down and said “let’s upset the Muslems!” Again, this is a private university, run by the Catholic church. Doesn’t malice demand that there is predetermination?
    3) We need to use more common sense and less political sense. In today’s times, the political correctness has gotten to a level never seen before. It’s not that I’m anti-Muslem. I went to college with just about everything. But there was a difference….it was a public university and we all worked toward a level of cooperation. If there was a Muslem university, wouldn’t I be expected to respect Muslem points of view, although I was a Christian? After all, I would have made the choice to attend that particular university and therefore go along with its policies.
    Just saying…….

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Jay F King

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Barbara

At least the Muslim students are able to worship in the way they choose, which is FAR MORE than any Christian might be allowed in many Islamic countries. They are offered the freedom to worship, but THEY chose to attend a Catholic institution. The Catholic school should NOT be required to remove symbols of their faith for a few students who follow a different religion. I doubt the symbols offend anyone else. Freedom to practice religion DOES NOT mean DICTATING how ALL others should practice theirs!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Lin

No Christian would be admitted to an Islamic institution would they?

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Linda

According to the article, the only person to complain is the hate-mongering lawyer. There may well be innocent students who are now the objects of ethnic-based hatred. IF they are there and IF they are quietly getting an education, they are also exposed to Christianity. What better way for them to learn?

  • http://Seattleeggs Rose Ann Posch

This professor Banzhaf is absurd. If the students take offense at symbols of the Catholic instutions, there are many, many other institutions they can attend. Why is the Catholic church always singled out by those wishing to denigrate it.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Nick Larson

This makes absolutely no sense! If catholic or Christian imagery offends you, why would you go to a Catholic University? That is like a Christian going to a Muslim University and complaining about Muslim imagery! That would not be tolerated, and they would not cater to a Christian. This world is catering way to much to complaints from other religions and atheists. If they don’t like it, don’t look at it. The only valid complaint they have is the prayer space request. If there is a number of students who require this, then they should provide a room.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Anthony Scuorzo

The Freedoms provided to US citizens must be upheld. As long as Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, etc. institutions do not preach antagonistic and inciting teachings against fellow citizens, then, their specific cultural teachings should be off limits Constitutionally.

However, when teaching declare and suggest aggressive behaviors be taken, to neutralize a specific culture, then We, Constitutionalists are bound to protect the maligned and to aggressively protest and thwart those hostile elements that stir real and true hatred based on falsehoods , revisionist histories, and 7th Century illiterate and irrationally thinking mobs, e.g. Islam comes to mind. Sharia Law has NO rightful place in American Society. The mere fact that muslim “sensitivities” are offended by a Private Catholic College religious decor, exemplifies that Islam has NO Place in the United States and its very existence here, if allowed to proliferate, will from their mosques, spill hatred and bloodshed. All one has to do is see the violence from muslims toward their host country citizenry. Europe is nearly lost. Our freedoms are truly at risk with the barbaric sharia doctrines. Already, Europeans act the ‘second class’ dehimi class. Islam sets its sights (sites – as in weapons) on ruling over, not living as equal partners and assimilating and integrating within its host country. The Catholic School should stand by its heritage.

Doesn’t anyone else see what’s really going on with this lawsuit?

It’s not really intended to force Catholic University to remove religious symbols. My bet is that it’s got another point — to sum up and highlight the aggression and supremacism of Islam and Sharia within our own culture. To wake people up.

We’ve all seen the reports, day after day: demands for taxpayer-financed footbaths and mosques, lawsuits over demanded prayer and Ramadan “accommodations,” demands for Islamic gender apartheid in public facilities, the “right” to degrading and dangerous religious costuming, the silencing of any criticism of Islam or its self-proclaimed prophet as offensive, and the abusive treatment of women and people who try to leave Islam.

I bet every remaining non-Muslim in the Middle East, all of whom live with the constant threat of Islamic silencing, violence, murder, rape and kidnapping, the burning of their churches and temples and the murders of their religious leaders, would know exactly what this lawsuit is about.

This professor is crazy like a fox.

this is stealth jihad— pure and simple. every time you accommodate one demand, there comes another. and this is the way to accomplish the goal of imposing shariah law into our system

I am not a big fan of catholicism. However, this could be typical of the encroaching camel with the nose in the tent. From what I understand, the muslim students are not the ones instigating the lawsuit. This lawyer strikes me as a troublemaker, and perhaps has an agenda he is unwilling to divulge. If this did originate with muslims, they can go to some madrassa or wherever they do not have to view offending symbols. Hopefully this will just get tossed out of court. Otherwise, I hope the school stays firm, does not remove any symbols. A separate room might be nice, but in this case not necessary. Stick to your guns, do not change anything.

First of all, this is a CATHOLIC university. If you have a problem with the catholic faith, go elsewhere. Plus there is not one complaint from the students?

I know, why doesn’t someone file a lawsuit against a Muslim school to force them to have crosses and christian prayer rooms in heir facilities just like the article talks about. We will then be able to see how the ACLU and other liberal organizations handle that one. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander!!! It’s time to turn the tables folks!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment A different Pamela

The lawyer who brought this suit was repeatedly asked the question this morning on WMAL, a local D.C. talk station, “Who brought this lawsuit to you?” He wouldn’t answer. “Did a student from the school bring the suit?” He wouldn’t answer. He refused to answer on the grounds of “privilege” no matter how the question was asked. Obviously no student brought the suit against CUA. Apparently Washington, D.C. is the one place in this country where you can sue someone without a client complaint. This guy is also suing CUA to prevent them from doing away with mixed-sex dorms. He has brought these suits under the pretext of “Human Rights” violations by the school. From the first-hand interviews I’ve seen/heard, I believe it has more to do with his ego than human rights. Also, if you type his name on a search, you’ll get his website where you’ll find that he teaches a course — “Legal Activism” to students so they can “learn to become public interest lawyers by bringing their own legal actions.” Reading through, I draw the conclusion the Mr. Banzhaf does not really believe in the unalienable right to freedom bestowed upon all mankind, only what he and the other “public interest activists” deem to be “allowed” freedoms. Just what we need today, PC lawyers looking for problems that don’t exist. UGH!

THEY CAME HERE,, DO I need to write it again, They came to America,, STOP TRYING TO CHANGE OUR way of life. Let a christian go to a muslim college and lets see what happens then,, Sorry But the idiot we have in the white house has been pushing this on the American People since he got elected,,Oh,but THATS RIGHT he is a christian,,YEA RIGHT, and for those that believe that I have land to sell you in Florida. What,WHAT is it going to take for people to wake up and get this crap to STOP. If we continue to ALLOW this to happen, you can KISS AMERICA as we ONCE knew it GOODBY,,and we are almost there people. In mid-October a christian student in Egypt was beaten to death by some of his Muslim classmates because he would not cover up the cross tatooed on his wrist and the cross he wore around his neck.

If indeed Muslim students have not offered a complaint then why would anyone outside the University do so ? If
Georgetown University had stood strong in their Faith and refused to remove their crucifixes and other symbols of their Faith when Obama requested them to episodes like this might not be happening. When I received Confirmation I never thought the day would come where in America I would have to defend my religion. No Catholic should apologize for Catholicism or its symbols.

In simplest terms, America is the land of the free, so any “offended” Muslim can go elsewhere to get educated!

This GWU professor should be penalized for filing a frivolous lawsuit, even if his agenda may be to try to wake up America to the attempts to impose Sharia law, etc.

How quickly have we forgotten the Muslim slaughter of Christians in Egypt?

[Not sure if this comment posted properly the first time, trying again.]

I’ve always believed this, and I’ll say it here; freedom OF religion is not freedom FROM religion. It saddens me that constitutional (not even civil) rights are thus misinterpreted as, among other things, the right to make everyone else let you do whatever you want.

You’re allowed to have your own religion, and practice it – if doing so doesn’t violate any LAWS, that is, for law supersedes religion in THIS country – and Congress isn’t allowed to infringe upon it. The key is in remembering that everyone ELSE is as free to practice theirs as you are yours – so you can’t just say (effectively) “You don’t explicitly accommodate me and my freedom of religion trumps yours because my religion is of a minority.”

And the worse thing is that it’s not even about Islam. It’s about a guy who, admitting that even the Muslims at this university aren’t speaking up about the “issue” themselves, still alleges a discrimination of omission, of inaction; still contends that diversity of beliefs must be met with universal acceptance; that there can’t be one truth but that everyone needs to believe that there can’t be one truth. Isn’t the paradox in that immediately apparent?

Don’t just listen to me, read up on it. Do your own research. And after everything, apply common sense. Thank you.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment JOHN HANEBURY

Is there a country in the world where immigrating Muslims have not caused a problem? Is there a country in the world where, once the immigrating Muslims became significant in numbers, they did not start to persecute non-Muslims(infidels in their eyes)–even to the death of their victims? Look at the trouble they have caused in France and the UK. You would think that Washington would take the hint —– stop the Muslim immigration and start deporting them. For those who think this sounds harsh —-just wait till your kids or grandkids have to submit to Islam or lose their lives —- and I am not being overly dramatic. Christians are fleeing Muslim countries in fear for their lives —-think it won’t happen here? It is just a matter of time if the trend is not reversed. Lebanon is a perfect example. It was a Christian country; the Christians gave Muslims asylum and before long the Christians were fleeing for their very lives —just ask Brigitte Gabriel.

I am sick and tired for a muslim to tell other Americans that it is offensive for this and that. Let them go back to their country where it is offensive for us not to find a church. We will not live there!!!
If a muslim choses a Catholic University to study at, they must accept for what it stands. If they dont like it, go to a muslim University, which hopefully will not offend you. This is the USofA and that is the way it is. Perhaps we should sue them for chosing an obvious University, which is catholic and wanting to convert it to what ever they chose. My advise is “dont accept muslim students, unl;ees they sign a paper that they will accept all the crosses and yet do their praying as they chose.” Have them sign it. Tell the professor he has no right to sue for what is OBVIOUSLY A CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY NOT MUSLIM UNIVERSITY. Unless the professor does not know how to read or know the difference.
I am sick of this mess with muslims. Stick to your guns and dont give in, it is all about manipulation and gaining control.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment SFCWizard77

For the muslims who are devout and follow the koran, it is their duty to wage war against all other religions until allah and islam reign supreme, even if it means their destruction.

Their religion and their sharia law are absolutely not compatable with the American way of life, our society and our laws.

Either they relax their views to accept us as we are and coexist in peace with us, or they need to get out and go back to whatever armpit of the earth they came from.

To D.T. Radmilovich: You are absolutely correct. He also cancelled/banned our national day of prayer, and then attended a muslim prayer breakfast with 50 imams from around the country on the whitehouse lawn, and on the day our national prayer breakfast was supposed to be held.

I have my own copy of the koran translated to English by NJ Dawood in 1956 reprinted in 1993. It is one of the most hate filled books I have ever read. Everyone would do well to know thy enemy. Get the book and read it, even if you just borrow it from the local library.

PLEASE read the article carefully. Not one Muslim student has complained. This is soley, at least for now, the badgering of one lawsuit-happy attorney. Surely he would not get away with this if he were attacking a school of another faith.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Liz

Every student has a chose in which school he or she wish to attend. If they choose a catholic school then they already knows that they must abide under the by-laws rules and ciriculum of that school. The key word is chose.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Billy Bowlegs

Make one anouncement. If you do not like the catholic decor, either quit, and if you complain, you are dismissed from school.

    End of policy.

For SCOTUS and ACLU, “You do not have any authority to pit one belief system against another (Sutor Court resolution).

    End of discussion.

Give students 2 Hours to group in a plain meeting room (gymnasium), let them collectively discuss their future education, and those that will not follow Catholic rules, are expelled immediately.

I was utterly aghast by yet another ridiculous attempt to undermine anything not of the muslim faith. When will western countries put a stop to this ridiculous action? If our own laws wont support & ensure our own way of life/beliefs,culture is maintained above all other fanatical & oppressive ideaologies then we must fight fire with fire. Christians,Jews & other religions must start the same far fetched actions opposing muslim prayer rooms, mosques, halal food, burqa’s etc etc. If it was up to this religion, Nothing western or non muslim would remain. I find it offensive that such a violent, fanatical & oppressive religion can cause such upheaval in our western world. Westerners need to make a stand or we will all be living like muslims. No rights for women,No hotels, clubs, mixing with the opposite sex, removal of all homosexuals, women wearing burqa’s and of course men entiled to have as many wives or partners as they wish. No way! time to send these fanatics a clear message Either come 2 western countries & embrace our culture/lifestyle OR stay in the oppressive & violent countries you hold so dear!

The Muslims cannot conquer us militarily so they have resorted to waging a campaign of cultural warfare to achieve their ends.To all those that think there are “good muslims” who want peace with us and “bad muslims” who work for our destruction; wake up! They ALL want our destruction; there is no such thing as a “good muslim”. The Koran is based on the death and destruction of all people not Muslim, and this includes us. If the Muslims don’t like the way we do things, they are more than free to go back where they came from. They are the immigrants and they MUST adapt to our way of doing things. If not, deport them. It is time for the American people to wake up and realize that we are under attack. Islam is NOT a peaceful religion and Muslims are NOT your friends. If these students don’t like Catholic accouterments, they should not have chosen to go to a Catholic school. Very simple. I hope to God that Catholic University defends itself vigorously and expels every Muslim currently attending class. We are losing ground quickly.

I’m not going to be filled with rage, I’m going to laugh out loud over the idiocy of the complaint. Catholic School. Period. We could go so far as to say those who are not Catholic cannot attend. Shame on the lawyer – what an idiot.

I watched a black militant muslim on television about a year ago and he said that by the year 2050 the United States would be an islamic country. The people of this country just turn a blind eye toward these fanatics hoping that they will just go away. The problem is they are not going away and things are only going to get worse especially if we don’t grow some backbone and stand up to these people. Remember we are one nation under God not allah. Seems a bit unreasonable that a Catholic school would be required to remove its Catholic identity to make room for an incompatible religion.

Seems to me that the reason one would attend a Catholic school is to learn in a Catholic context.

Therefore, to force the school to remove crosses from the wall for the benefit of an incompatible religion would defeat the very purpose of a Catholic education.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment David Smith

Pardon me. This IS a Catholic University. Why would Muslims WANT to attend? (Unless it is to start trouble…) Let them enroll in another school. I hope and pray the University’s board of Regents doesn’t back down. While ALL students have the right to worship as they choose…to be Muslim and knowingly attend a Catholic University(I’m sure there was some kind of pre-school orientation) and THEN complain is well…just SO Islamic. Please DO NOT pander to them.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Tom G

As a devout catholic (daily mass whenever possible) I read the article and subsequent posts with great interest. I am shocked by lack of reading comperehension and the degree of anti muslim sentiment of the posters.
One person, the attorney, is objecting to the University’s alleged lack of accomodation. There was no mention any muslim students taking part in the law suit, yet the majority of posters attacked muslim students and muslims in genral.
One person even called for an end to muslim immigration. How ironic, considering catholics were victims of the same type of discrimination in the mid 19th century (look up the Know Nothing Party).
This is a straw man issue, there is no movement to limit the freedom of christian schools to operate in the way they see fit. There is enough religious intolerance in the world already, don’t get duped into contributing to the hatred! Live as Jesus would have us live, with love for all.

The only reason they go to school there is to cause trouble and try to push their satanic beliefs off onto the rest of the students. Expell them and send them home!!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Carolyn

I am amazed at how many people have responded to this article have simply not read the entire article, or read it through hate-tinted glasses and saw only what they wanted to see. As a number of commenters have pointed out, there is not a single Muslim student at this school who has made any kind of complaint about this issue, nor are they in any way involved in the lawsuit. Apparently they did know exactly what to expect when they enrolled in a Christian University (which has every right to display objects related to their faith anywhere on campus they like). Please place the blame for this frivolous where it is due, on the American lawyer (who is probably Christian) who filed it.

In response to some commenters who assumed that no Muslim school would allow those of different faiths to attend, I know from personal experience that this is not true of all Muslim schools. In fact, I don’t know of one that prohibits students of other faiths.

It disturbs me greatly about the passiveness of the American people and their lack of awareness. They are so busy with their electronic things that they either aren’t aware or don’t care about what is happening to this coountry. They elected a president that can’t and won’t produce his birth certificate and who allows illegals to run amok in this country and giving them everything free until Americans are losing their jobs and homes, and now when he should be questioning this renegade lawyer about his trouble making between the Catholic college and Muslim students he’s puting his nose in to a shooting because it’s white against black. None of his business.I’ve been writing my Congressmen since 1993 about the folly of allowing this country to be overrun with illegals. No one paid attention. Then in 2001 the unspeakable happened to the twin towers and oh yes, the American people thought it was terrible, but if you didn’t have anyone in it it was soon forgotten and they thought it ok for the Muslims to build a mosque next to the site. That was unforgiveable! I have written Congress about how quietly the Muslims are puching their evil religion on and nobody seem to care. And who gives backing to all of this? Our judges, Supreme Court and our President. When he spoke at the Catholic college and they took down all of their symbols to accommodate him was disgusting, and if he is a Christian as he claims why would they even dream of doing that? And why would they do it for anybody? This so called Christian president also cancelled/barred our day of prayer and on the same dayattended a Muslim prayer breakfast with 50 imams on the Whitehouse lawn. There should have been an all out hew and cry about that but the American people are too busy with their electronic games and toysto be bothered. This country is very close to a severe race riot and still nobody cares. Well, when we allow enough Jihadists in here it really won’t matter whether we care or not.I thought when they cut off our journalists head and showed it on tv that it would jar them in to awareness of the danger we are all in, but no, most of them don’t even know who Mr. Pearl was.As for the Muslim students at the Catholic college, maybe being exposed Our governmentAmerican peopleto a loving GOD would be to our and their advantage. Since they are in our country and our school I feel that all Burques be banned. Anyone completely covering themselves most likely has something to hide, whether it’s ID, sex, or weapon. If anyone has a right to complain it’s the American people.Since white Christian people settled this country and made it the most powerful country in the world I don’t understand since we’ve been overrun with all the scum the other nations could send us why we are being treated as if we were the enemy and are treated like second class citizens. Since I am a senior from the WW11 generation I have had a front seat watching my country being destroyed and it really hurts, since our government is allowing it. Lets waken the sleeping giant and restore the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

We as Canadians have traditions too!!!! We have celebrated christmas, halloween, and anything else you people are trying to change for years!!! Religious prayers, taking place in schools? Seriously? We have uniforms for our professions, wear it, or choose another job!! If you come to this country, and you don’t like it for what it is, then go home…. Nobody will stop you… Stop trying to change our ways! I’ve heard more than enough on this issue! Religious daggers? and blah blah blah? Get Real!!! I wonder what would happen, if we went over to a muslim country etc.. and started trying to force our ways on them….I could just imagine, the uproar that would ensue.

If muslim can practice freely there costume and religion we have the right as catholic like other religion have crosses where ever we want because we are free like we should respect each other by not bothering what others do but what we do ourselves.

  • Wayne

Well if you are OFFENDED by the Cross, then you should worship in another place.

This is a CATHOLIC school. not Islam. Why is there even a debate!!!??

  • blue_persuasion

Simple solution: NO MUSLIM EVER should be allowed to join. All should be denied acceptance by the university. Problem solved.
