Complaint says crosses at Catholic school offensive, prevent Muslim prayers

Crosses in every room at Washingon D.C.’s Catholic University of America are a human rights violation that prevent Muslim students from praying.

That’s the complaint to the Washington, D.C. Office of Human Rights filed by a professor from rival George Washington University across town.

GWU Law School Professor John Banzhaf takes the Catholic institution to task for acting “probably with malice” against Muslim students in a 60-page complaint that cites ”offensive” Catholic imagery all over the Catholic school, which he says hinder Muslims from praying.

Baffled Catholic University officials say they have never received a complaint from any of the schools Muslim students.

Banzhaf, who already has a pending lawsuit against the university over ending its policy of allowing mixed-gender dormitories and has a history of filing civil rights suits on such topics as childhood obesity and smoking, filed the complaint alleging that Muslim students are not given their own prayer rooms.

He alleges that the university, “does not provide space – as other universities do – for the many daily prayers Muslim students must make, forcing them instead to find temporarily empty classrooms where they are often surrounded by Catholic symbols which are incongruous to their religion,” according to the Tower, Catholic University’s student newspaper.

The complaint further objects that Muslims must pray at the school’s chapels “and at the cathedral that looms over the entire campus – the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.”

A spokesperson for the human rights office said they are investigating Banzhaf’s complaint — and the inquiry could take as long as six months.

“This attorney is really turning civil rights on its head,” observed Patrick Reilly of the Cardinal Newman Socity. “He’s using the law for his own discrimination against the Catholic institution and essentially saying Catholic University cannot operate according to Catholic principles.”

The complaint is absurd, writes Thomas Peters on the website CatholicVote.

“Can you imagine a law professor helping Catholic students to sue a Jewish or Muslim school to demand that the schools install crosses, remove their religious symbols, and allow the Catholics to construct a chapel on their property?” wrote Peters. ”Can you imagine the argument being that Jewish and Muslims schools using their religious symbols and following their faith traditions would be described in the legal brief as “offensive”?!

“Normally I would have confidence that this lawsuit will be deemed without merit, but the way things are going these days, I just can’t be sure anymore. Simply incredible.”

If these heathens want to attend a Catholic university, they need to expect certain things, and they need to adhere to University policies. If they don’t like it, they can go to a Public university where idiotic “racially discriminatory” whinings are actually taken seriously by the politically correct crowd. I don’t know if Professor John Banzhaf is Muslim or not, he definitely does not go to school there. So there should not be any comments about Muslims complaining about this. There should be lots of comments about an attorney trying to tell a private religious college not to offend anybody at the college with their religious practices.

First of all: Folks, please re-read the article. Some nefarious cabal of jihadist Muslim students isn’t driving this complaint about the Christian visual art at the university — it’s a grandstanding, frivolous-lawsuit-mongering non-Muslim attorney at another university. Xenophobic much?

Secondly: There are many reasons why students might want to study at private universities whose faith traditions are not their own. As most commenters have noted/alluded to, these students know what they’re getting into when they enroll and don’t need to be legally “protected” from exposure to that institution’s religious roots.

Finally: I can’t speak for all church-sponsored colleges or universities, but many of them, aware that some of their student body are persons of other faiths, make accomodations for them of one kind or another — recognizing their student organizations, offering meeting space, working with students whose religious observances conflict with, say, exam schedules to make alternate arrangements, and so forth. That’s just hospitality to “the stranger,” which I seem to remember some guy named Jesus indicating he wanted his friends to demonstrate on his behalf.

He also sued MCDonalds for “pre-frying” french fries (and won millions). For all the possible just causes in the world, you feel the need to pick this? And the really sad part is, it is working. We are giving him free publicity, and so many on here have jumped into post that the “Muslim Students” are rediculous and when they applied they should have known…does anyone even know if there are practicing Muslim students attending the school? I suspect if they are practicing they are not attending this school. I can tell you, I personally would not attend a Muslim school (though I respect their rights to have one). Islam needs reformation very badly, rather then whitewashing in America and pretending to be a “peaceful religion”. Nothing could be further from truth! Koran and Hadith are filled with hateful statements against the Jews, Christians and “infidels”.

In the past Jews and Christians were able to live in Muslim countries as second-hand citizens, dhimmis, who had to pay special tax. There are no Jews left in the Arab world and very few in any Muslim country since Islamists have had pogroms when Israel was formed. There were more Jewish refugees who fled Muslim countries into Israel then Muslims who fled Israel in and around 1948. Those were settled in Israel and Palestinians are used as a pawn to rile up Muslim mobs around the world against the Jews.

Now Christians are suffering the same fate in most Muslims countries, which underwent Jasmin “revolution” only to see rise of Muslim Brotherhood, an intolerant and violent group that is into grab for power and wants to impose strict sharia on everybody. Sharia is incompatible with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and all those countries practicing sharia should be expelled from UN since they do not belong to the family of civilized humans.

Muslims in the US who think that they can use our laws to impose their medieval religion and its intolerance should to to countries where they are free to practice such “justice” and stop bothering regular Americans. The Ground Zero Mosque is an affront to human freedom and humanity!

When I read this first in the news and later here I was still stunned.
1) Is this Catholic School a public university or private. If it is private, then people don’t have to go there. If they do, it is common sense that they would accept the entire package, including crosses, and Catholic theology.
2) I really don’t understand that now, suddenly there is malice toward Muslems. This university has been around for many, many years. Having taught in a private Catholic high school, I’m sure no one sat down and said “let’s upset the Muslems!” Again, this is a private university, run by the Catholic church. Doesn’t malice demand that there is predetermination?
3) We need to use more common sense and less political sense. In today’s times, the political correctness has gotten to a level never seen before. It’s not that I’m anti-Muslem. I went to college with just about everything. But there was a difference….it was a public university and we all worked toward a level of cooperation. If there was a Muslem university, wouldn’t I be expected to respect Muslem points of view, although I was a Christian? After all, I would have made the choice to attend that particular university and therefore go along with its policies.
Just saying…….

The Freedoms provided to US citizens must be upheld. As long as Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, etc. institutions do not preach antagonistic and inciting teachings against fellow citizens, then, their specific cultural teachings should be off limits Constitutionally.

However, when teaching declare and suggest aggressive behaviors be taken, to neutralize a specific culture, then We, Constitutionalists are bound to protect the maligned and to aggressively protest and thwart those hostile elements that stir real and true hatred based on falsehoods , revisionist histories, and 7th Century illiterate and irrationally thinking mobs, e.g. Islam comes to mind. Sharia Law has NO rightful place in American Society. The mere fact that muslim “sensitivities” are offended by a Private Catholic College religious decor, exemplifies that Islam has NO Place in the United States and its very existence here, if allowed to proliferate, will from their mosques, spill hatred and bloodshed. All one has to do is see the violence from muslims toward their host country citizenry. Europe is nearly lost. Our freedoms are truly at risk with the barbaric sharia doctrines. Already, Europeans act the ‘second class’ dehimi class. Islam sets its sights (sites – as in weapons) on ruling over, not living as equal partners and assimilating and integrating within its host country. They are FREE to choose any Muslim college, but my guess is that they want our freedoms with their Sharia restrictions. It just won’t work! If the Muslim students win this one, WE SHOULD ALL BE CONCERNED FOR OUR FUTURE AND THE FUTURE OF OUR COUNTRY.

Doesn’t anyone else see what’s really going on with this lawsuit?

It’s not really intended to force Catholic University to remove religious symbols. My bet is that it’s got another point — to sum up and highlight the aggression and supremacism of Islam and Sharia within our own culture. To wake people up.

We’ve all seen the reports, day after day: demands for taxpayer-financed footbaths and mosques, lawsuits over demanded prayer and Ramadan “accommodations,” demands for Islamic gender apartheid in public facilities, the “right” to degrading and dangerous religious costuming, the silencing of any criticism of Islam or its self-proclaimed prophet as offensive, and the abusive treatment of women and people who try to leave Islam.

I bet every remaining non-Muslim in the Middle East, all of whom live with the constant threat of Islamic silencing, violence, murder, rape and kidnapping, the burning of their churches and temples and the murders of their religious leaders, would know exactly what this lawsuit is about.

This professor is crazy like a fox.

From what I understand, the muslim students are not the ones instigating the lawsuit. This lawyer strikes me as a troublemaker, and perhaps has an agenda he is unwilling to divulge. If this did originate with muslims, they can go to some madrassa or wherever they do not have to view offending symbols. Hopefully this will just get tossed out of court. Otherwise, I hope the school stays firm, does not remove any symbols. A separate room might be nice, but in this case not necessary. Stick to your guns, do not change anything.

The lawyer who brought this suit was repeatedly asked the question this morning on WMAL, a local D.C. talk station, “Who brought this lawsuit to you?” He wouldn’t answer. “Did a student from the school bring the suit?” He wouldn’t answer. He refused to answer on the grounds of “privilege” no matter how the question was asked. Obviously no student brought the suit against CUA. Apparently Washington, D.C. is the one place in this country where you can sue someone without a client complaint. This guy is also suing CUA to prevent them from doing away with mixed-sex dorms. He has brought these suits under the pretext of “Human Rights” violations by the school. From the first-hand interviews I’ve seen/heard, I believe it has more to do with his ego than human rights. Also, if you type his name on a search, you’ll get his website where you’ll find that he teaches a course — “Legal Activism” to students so they can “learn to become public interest lawyers by bringing their own legal actions.” Reading through, I draw the conclusion the Mr. Banzhaf does not really believe in the unalienable right to freedom bestowed upon all mankind, only what he and the other “public interest activists” deem to be “allowed” freedoms. Just what we need today, PC lawyers looking for problems that don’t exist. UGH!

[Not sure if this comment posted properly the first time, trying again.]

I’ve always believed this, and I’ll say it here; freedom OF religion is not freedom FROM religion. It saddens me that constitutional (not even civil) rights are thus misinterpreted as, among other things, the right to make everyone else let you do whatever you want.

You’re allowed to have your own religion, and practice it – if doing so doesn’t violate any LAWS, that is, for law supersedes religion in THIS country – and Congress isn’t allowed to infringe upon it. The key is in remembering that everyone ELSE is as free to practice theirs as you are yours – so you can’t just say (effectively) “You don’t explicitly accommodate me and my freedom of religion trumps yours because my religion is of a minority.”

And the worse thing is that it’s not even about Islam. It’s about a guy who, admitting that even the Muslims at this university aren’t speaking up about the “issue” themselves, still alleges a discrimination of omission, of inaction; still contends that diversity of beliefs must be met with universal acceptance; that there can’t be one truth but that everyone needs to believe that there can’t be one truth. Isn’t the paradox in that immediately apparent?

Don’t just listen to me, read up on it. Do your own research. And after everything, apply common sense. Thank you.

Is there a country in the world where immigrating Muslims have not caused a problem? Is there a country in the world where, once the immigrating Muslims became significant in numbers, they did not start to persecute non-Muslims(infidels in their eyes)–even to the death of their victims? Look at the trouble they have caused in France and the UK. You would think that Washington would take the hint —– stop the Muslim immigration and start deporting them. For those who think this sounds harsh —-just wait till your kids or grandkids have to submit to Islam or lose their lives —- and I am not being overly dramatic. Christians are fleeing Muslim countries in fear for their lives —-think it won’t happen here? It is just a matter of time if the trend is not reversed. Lebanon is a perfect example. It was a Christian country; the Christians gave Muslims asylum and before long the Christians were fleeing for their very lives —just ask Brigitte Gabriel.

If a muslim choses a Catholic University to study at, they must accept for what it stands. If they dont like it, go to a muslim University, which hopefully will not offend you. This is the USofA and that is the way it is. Perhaps we should sue them for chosing an obvious University, which is catholic and wanting to convert it to what ever they chose. My advise is “dont accept muslim students, unl;ees they sign a paper that they will accept all the crosses and yet do their praying as they chose.” Have them sign it. Tell the professor he has no right to sue for what is OBVIOUSLY A CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY NOT MUSLIM UNIVERSITY. Unless the professor does not know how to read or know the difference.

For the muslims who are devout and follow the koran, it is their duty to wage war against all other religions until allah and islam reign supreme, even if it means their destruction.

Their religion and their sharia law are absolutely not compatable with the American way of life, our society and our laws.

Either they relax their views to accept us as we are and coexist in peace with us, or they need to get out and go back to whatever armpit of the earth they came from.

To D.T. Radmilovich: You are absolutely correct. He also cancelled/banned our national day of prayer, and then attended a muslim prayer breakfast with 50 imams from around the country on the whitehouse lawn, and on the day our national prayer breakfast was supposed to be held.

I have my own copy of the koran translated to English by NJ Dawood in 1956 reprinted in 1993. It is one of the most hate filled books I have ever read. Everyone would do well to know thy enemy. Get the book and read it, even if you just borrow it from the local library.

Keep our schools Catholic with crosses and paintings of Jesus and the Bessed Mother.

Lutheranchik: Jesus also said to beware of false prophets.

Are these people serious, when does it end??? Allow me to express my opinion these are solely my opinion.
If the way our traditions and ways of life are not acceptable to anyone who lives here they are free to leave. If they imigrated to the US they can go home not a problem.
My America is founded by Christian beliefs with Guidance from the God we were taught about. Other religions are welcome here and they will be accepted. DO NOT TRY TO FORCE OUR RELIGION OUT OR YOUR BELIEFS ON THE RESIDENCE OF AMERICA. DO NOT TRY TO FORCE YOUR LEGAL SYSTEM ON AMERICANS EITHER, LIVE BY OUR RULES OR GET OUT!!!!!!

Seems a bit unreasonable that a Catholic school would be required to remove its Catholic identity to make room for an incompatible religion.

Seems to me that the reason one would attend a Catholic school is to learn in a Catholic context.

Therefore, to force the school to remove crosses from the wall for the benefit of an incompatible religion would defeat the very purpose of a Catholic education.

Pardon me. This IS a Catholic University. Why would Muslims WANT to attend? (Unless it is to start trouble…) Let them enroll in another school. I hope and pray the University’s board of Regents doesn’t back down. While ALL students have the right to worship as they choose…to be Muslim and knowingly attend a Catholic University(I’m sure there was some kind of pre-school orientation) and THEN complain is well…just SO Islamic. Please DO NOT pander to them.

You know, there are a lot of ignorant fools posting on this board. I guess they can’t let an opportunity to “whack a Muslim” go by simply because they do not read the full story. I know it’s useless since you freaks won’t bother to check it out for yourselves, but there are NO MUSLIM STUDENTS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE CUA!!! Can you bother to take time to get it through your thick skulls?

As a devout catholic (daily mass whenever possible) I read the article and subsequent posts with great interest. I am shocked by lack of reading comperehension and the degree of anti muslim sentiment of the posters.
One person, the attorney, is objecting to the University’s alleged lack of accomodation. There was no mention any muslim students taking part in the law suit, yet the majority of posters attacked muslim students and muslims in genral.
One person even called for an end to muslim immigration. How ironic, considering catholics were victims of the same type of discrimination in the mid 19th century (look up the Know Nothing Party).
This is a straw man issue, there is no movement to limit the freedom of christian schools to operate in the way they see fit. There is enough religious intolerance in the world already, don’t get duped into contributing to the hatred! Live as Jesus would have us live, with love for all.

They can turn their stupid heads or pull the rag over the eyes and DON’T LOOK! Nobody makes them stare at the crosses==do like I do when I see one of them coming–I don’t look at them! Go back to where ever if they don’t like freedom of religion–not ir-religion like they have. The only reason they go to school there is to cause trouble and try to push their satanic beliefs off onto the rest of the students. Expell them and send them home!!

I am amazed at how many people have responded to this article have simply not read the entire article, or read it through hate-tinted glasses and saw only what they wanted to see. As a number of commenters have pointed out, there is not a single Muslim student at this school who has made any kind of complaint about this issue, nor are they in any way involved in the lawsuit. Apparently they did know exactly what to expect when they enrolled in a Christian University (which has every right to display objects related to their faith anywhere on campus they like). Please place the blame for this frivolous where it is due, on the American lawyer (who is probably Christian) who filed it.

In response to some commenters who assumed that no Muslim school would allow those of different faiths to attend, I know from personal experience that this is not true of all Muslim schools. In fact, I don’t know of one that prohibits students of other faiths.

It disturbs me greatly about the passiveness of the American people and their lack of awareness. They are so busy with their electronic things that they either aren’t aware or don’t care about what is happening to this coountry. They elected a president that can’t and won’t produce his birth certificate and who allows illegals to run amok in this country and giving them everything free until Americans are losing their jobs and homes, and now when he should be questioning this renegade lawyer about his trouble making between the Catholic college and Muslim students he’s puting his nose in to a shooting because it’s white against black. None of his business.I’ve been writing my Congressmen since 1993 about the folly of allowing this country to be overrun with illegals. No one paid attention. Then in 2001 the unspeakable happened to the twin towers and oh yes, the American people thought it was terrible, but if you didn’t have anyone in it it was soon forgotten and they thought it ok for the Muslims to build a mosque next to the site. That was unforgiveable! I have written Congress about how quietly the Muslims are puching their evil religion on and nobody seem to care. And who gives backing to all of this? Our judges, Supreme Court and our President. When he spoke at the Catholic college and they took down all of their symbols to accommodate him was disgusting, and if he is a Christian as he claims why would they even dream of doing that? And why would they do it for anybody? This so called Christian president also cancelled/barred our day of prayer and on the same dayattended a Muslim prayer breakfast with 50 imams on the Whitehouse lawn. There should have been an all out hew and cry about that but the American people are too busy with their electronic games and toysto be bothered. This country is very close to a severe race riot and still nobody cares. Well, when we allow enough Jihadists in here it really won’t matter whether we care or not.I thought when they cut off our journalists head and showed it on tv that it would jar them in to awareness of the danger we are all in, but no, most of them don’t even know who Mr. Pearl was.As for the Muslim students at the Catholic college, maybe being exposed Our governmentAmerican peopleto a loving GOD would be to our and their advantage. Since they are in our country and our school I feel that all Burques be banned. Anyone completely covering themselves most likely has something to hide, whether it’s ID, sex, or weapon. If anyone has a right to complain it’s the American people.Since white Christian people settled this country and made it the most powerful country in the world I don’t understand since we’ve been overrun with all the scum the other nations could send us why we are being treated as if we were the enemy and are treated like second class citizens. Since I am a senior from the WW11 generation I have had a front seat watching my country being destroyed and it really hurts, since our government is allowing it. Lets waken the sleeping giant and restore the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

We have uniforms for our professions, wear it, or choose another job!! If you come to this country, and you don’t like it for what it is, then go home…. Nobody will stop you… Stop trying to change our ways! I’ve heard more than enough on this issue! Religious daggers? and blah blah blah? Get Real!!! I wonder what would happen, if we went over to a muslim country etc.. and started trying to force our ways on them….I could just imagine, the uproar that would ensue.
