Does bestselling author Rick Warren want Christianity, Islam to merge into ‘Chrislam?’

If there’s any hope for America, radio talk show host Dr. Laurie Roth is having trouble seeing it.

Rick Warren praying at Obama's inauguration

“Everywhere we look today politicians, media and global elite are severing the traditional and important boundaries of religion, sovereignty, laws and freedoms fought for,” she writes on the news site NewsWithViews:

We have big time pastors, such as Pastor Rick Warren of the Saddleback church diving into the sewage of political correctness and compromise. He talks of a Christian and Islamic partnership. He calls Christians and Muslims to work with each other and focus on a social doctrine, namely, spiritual emptiness, corrupt leadership, extreme poverty, disease and illiteracy.

Apparently, in our newfound religion of ‘chrislam’ we are to ignore the gospel of Christ, which doesn’t include Muhammad’s vision and oppressive teaching?

At the very least, we are to water down and push to the back room, the unique, gospel message of Jesus. Are we to pretend fundamentalist Islam doesn’t want a worldwide caliphate, preach jihad and death to infidels, Christians and Jews.

So, is there anything to this merging of Christianity and Islam? Back in February, there were reports of churches in Houston, Atlanta, Seattle and Detroit calling for an ecumenical reconciliation between Christianity and Islam. In addition to sermons, Sunday school lessons were reportedly being centered on the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad.

“Qurans will be placed in the pews next to the Bibles,” wrote Pastor Mike Sanderson in his personal blog:

The concept of Chrislam, now embraced by such preachers as Rick Warren … appears to have emerged from a program on the meaning of “love your neighbor” at Grace Fellowship Church in Atlanta, Georgia, “In 2001, like most Americans, we were pretty awakened to the true Islamic presence in the world and in the United States,” says Jon Stallsmith, the outreach minister at Grace Fellowship. “Jesus says we should love our neighbors. We can’t do that without having a relationship with them.”

Stallsmith maintains that a rapprochement between Muslims and Christians can be achieved by the fact that Jesus is mentioned twenty-five times in the Quran.

The Chrislam movement has gained impetus by statements from President George W. Bush and that Christians, Jews, and Muslims all worship the same God and by Rick Warren’s reference to Isa (the Muslim name for Jesus) in his prayer at the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

“The recent political developments and the fact that we’re fighting two wars in Muslim countries should sharpen that need to know how to talk to these guys,” Stallsmith insists “We want to find peace, reconciliation around a scriptural understanding of Jesus.”

Has bestselling author Rick Warren really endorsed a merging of Christianity and Islam?

Televangelist Jack Van Impe recently left Trinity Broadcasting Network as a result of his accusations aimed at Warren, suggesting that Warren is pushing Chrislam. Van Impe points to an Islamic conference in which Warren was a speaker at two years ago as evidence. Others in the Christian community and beyond have repeated the claim.

Did Warren really pray in the “name of Isa?” Here is how he closed his prayer at the Obama Inaguruation:

I humbly ask this in the name of the one who changed my life, Yeshua, Isa, Jesus [Spanish pronunciation], Jesus, who taught us to pray …

Warren then led everyone in the Lord’s Prayer. So, has he embraced “Chrislam?” Warren responds flatly that the assertions “are completely incorrect, based on believing 2nd hand false rumors instead of finding out the facts before speaking up. ‘Only a fool believes all he hears’ (Proverbs 14:15).

Here is what his friend Geoff Surratt posted on Pastors.com:

If you tend to believe everything you read on the internet, often forward “shocking” emails or take anything you “see for yourself on YouTube” as truth, then this post will do nothing to dissuade you from believing that Pastor Rick Warren espouses “chrislam”. On the other hand, if you tend to research rumors before you pass them on or try to find the truth about people before attacking them on the internet this post might help.

Let me be very clear: Pastor Rick Warren does not believe in, promote or validate chrislam on any level.

Surratt then quotes Warren:

The so-called “Chrislam” rumor is 100% false. If the guy who started this libelous myth, or anyone else who passed it on, had obeyed our Lord’s command (Matt. 18:18-20) to come directly to me, and then asked what I actually believed – they would have been embarrassed to learn that I believe the exact opposite. As a fourth generation Christian pastor, my life and ministry are built on the truth that Jesus is the only way, and our inerrant Bible is our only true authority.

As an evangelist, I spend much of my time speaking to non-Christian groups. You cannot win your enemies to Christ; only your friends, so we must build bridges of friendship and love to those who believe differently so Jesus can walk across that bridge into their hearts. Besides, it is not a sin, but rather COMMANDED by Jesus that we love our enemies. In the past 10 years, Saddleback Church has baptized over 22,000 new adult believers – simply because we express love to those who don’t know Christ yet.

It is nonsense to believe that you must compromise your beliefs, or water down your convictions in order to love someone, or even just treat them with dignity.

Jesus was called “the friend of sinners” by the legalistic Pharisees because he hung out with (and clearly loved) unbelievers. I HOPE YOU will

1) Always believe that EVERYONE needs Jesus as their Lord & Savior.
2) Have the courage to associate with nonbelievers in order to love them and bring them to the Savior.
3) Consider being called “a friend of sinners” a Christ-like compliment.
4) Refuse to pass on rumors until you’ve checked for the truth with the person accused.

God bless you, Rick Warren

Warren’s close friend Brandon Cox recently wrote, “Does Rick Warren Endorse Chrislam? No. Period.” Although he was tempted to leave it at that, Cox explains:

I’m proud of Pastor Warren for deciding to spend his time and attention on the spreading of the gospel for the redemption of the nations rather than defending himself against every false accusation.

Make no mistake, Rick Warren loves Muslims deeply!!

If you don’t, you have a problem with Jesus who loves Muslims even more than Rick does.

During WW2, Americans fought against the murder of innocent Jews and to retaliate for 12/7. We did not attempt to combine Christianity with Hitler’s POV. Islam’s goal is also to murder all Jews but they have added Christians to the mix! We can no more unite with Islam’s POV than we could unite with Hitler’s POV! In WAR you strive to destroy the enemy, not unite with them!

I was disturbed by the premise of accusations against Pastor Warren. I have read some work Pastor but that never gave me the impressions outlined in conclusions herein. What perturbed me was the vibes that anyone who adopts reconciliatory tone with Muslims would become victim of vicious attacks, thus isolating Muslims themselves. What were even more concerning were the comments by C Martin. It is obvious people; including Muslims themselves are not aware of teachings of Islam. Symbolism is very powerful way of conveying message, and symbols used by C Martin are etched in our collective psyche portraying the face of evil. It saddens me that someone is willing to use that kind of imagery without really knowing much about Islam. I invite all those who are interested in making informed decisions to see for yourself what Islam teaches in regards to those burning topics which are disturbing to all peace loving people, including majority of Muslims.
The best I can do here is leave with the word of Prophet himself in The Charter of Freedom which he granted to St. Catherine’s Monastery in Mount Sinai
“This is the document which Muhammad, the son of Abdullah, God’s Prophet, Warner and Bearer of glad tidings has caused to be written so that there should remain no excuse for those coming after. I have caused this document to be written for the Christians of the East and West, for those who live near, and for those of the distant lands, for the Christians living at present and for those who will come after, for those Christians who are known to us and for those as well whom we do not know.
Any Muslim violating or distorting what has been ordained will be considered to be violating God’s Covenant and will be transgressing against His Promise and by doing so, will incur God’s wrath, be he a monarch or an ordinary subject…”

May you live in Peace, alway

This is prob. the 1st time I have been to this web site and I have been seriously impressed with the grade of both the weblog itself along with the comments from the posts here. It really is great to discover individuals who take blogging and site-building seriously (but certainly not too seriously!) and that they appeal to an audience of high quality folks to their blog.

I would like to see both Christianity and Islam return to their Jewish roots. Only within Bet Israel can there ever be true peace and unity.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Jeannemarie Simon

What’s the problem with loving Muslims? If St Francis could meet with the Sultan of Egypt during the 5th crusade, why can’t we cooperate with Islam in bringing God’s love to the world. Anyone who downgrades the Koran hasn’t read it through. Violence? Certainly, but have the complainers read the Bible all the way through?

rick warren and obama are working for the satan the master antichrist…..and most of the people of the world are antichrist …islam was started by a man who liked little boys and rapped them…now thats a fact just check it out for yourself…and god hates all sin..

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Laureen

Messiah did not “hang around unbelievers”. He did as His Father directed Him, “To seek the lost sheep of the House of Yisrael.” The Good and True Shepherd was tending to His brothers who were sinners NOT “unbelievers”. As to the “prayer” at the inauguration, Mr. Warren was praying to a false god. Go read what is written inside the building on The Temple Mount. If it is not for the True Messiah, then it can only be false. Our brother John in his letters warns us about anti-messiahs, yes plural.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Clifford Leroy Inlow

I believe as brother Rick Warren does about loving your enemies. We have to go out among them to be able to win then for Jesus Christ. We have to go to them, They won’t come to us willingly. That is why mission work is so important in the individual churches The “Word” is no good if it stays silenced.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment tonibarb

Yes GOD loves each and everyone of us, but He is not willing to compormise what He stands for. If He was going to do that, He would have let Satan stay in Heaven. Sll of you people who claim that you’re Christians better stand ready with expectations and get more intense in your prayer life, going to church, love walk, and make sure that you’re sin free because you are getting ready to be tested if you haven’t already. Time is winding down quickly. Faster than we realize.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Stephanie

The great commission extorts us to “go out” into the world preaching the Gospel. No where does it say only preach to people who are already saved. The bible also states those without sin cast the first stone. Jesus was seen talking to a notorious sinner and by befriending her, he was able to win her soul. I pray that more of the so called “Christian Community” will be more Christlike as Pastor Warren in order to win more souls as we have been instructed to do and not waiste time calling people names and pointing fingers. Neither the President or Pastor Warren are the antichrist as both have proclaimed Jesus is Lord, Hallelujah!

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Gaia

One can be a Muslim without carefully reading Koran, just as one can be a Christian without reading Christian Bible (New testament) and a Jew without reading Jewish Bible (Christians erroneously call it Old Testament). Therefore, urging Christians, Jews and Muslims to work together on American Democracy does not mean that Jews and Christians would introduce Koran in their pews in churches and synagogues. Koran already has a lot of Jewish and Christians Bible in it, but in addition it has some nasty passages against Jews and Christians and some that encourage terrorism, such as statements that “eternal” life is what a Muslim should be concerned with and NOT THIS life on Earth (as Jews are dissed for doing). This passage when interpreted by some Jihadist imams are used to lure young men to blow themselves up while murdering Jews and Americans.

Muslims need reformation very urgently to make their religion compatible with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Muslim countries to finally sign to it or else be expelled from the UN, since sharia is NOT compatible with this great UN document, which Elenore Roosevelt helped create.

If people want to go off and start their own religion, more power to them. But, the body as a whole will never join with another. Muslims and Christians can make fine friends and should learn how to get along in this world. But, we will forever try to convert each other. That fine line will always be there.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment J M Perry

It is very obvious that Dr. Roth has never attended a Saddleback service or heard Pastor Rick speak. Had she, these statements would have never been printed nor suggested.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Deanne

Did not God create all people? He tells us he loves each of his created. Then why not dialogue with other God loving people? It seems God is blessing the people of Islam as they expand. Why? What do we Christians need to learn, prayerfully. Lastly, I trust Rick Warren as a committed Christian,

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment paula

Blessings, I welcome all people. If the Heavenly Father “YAHWEH” is the creator of all and sent His son “Jesus” who died for our sins, how is it we cannot share with others who just might accept Chist as their personal Savior. Muslim or any other

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Samuel Akhtar

Jesus Christ exhorted his followers, the Christians, to love their enemies under all circumstances; he himself set an example for them when he prayed for his enemies while breathing his last on the cross. But the question is how far a Christian has to go in order to build relationships with non-belivers including the Muslims? While building relationships a Christian has to honest and truthful to himself and others; this forms the very foundation of building a healthy relationship. The Christian does not have to compromise on the Lordship of Jesus Christ, his uniqueness as savior of the world, and authority of the Scriptures. We have to convey the message of Jesus Christ and not forego it for the sake of building relationships; the Muslims already know what Christians believe and proclaim. By the way the Qoranic version of Jesus Christ “Isa” is not at all his true reflection and there a caution has to be observed while replacing Jesus Christ with “Isa”, they are not the same. A true Christian can never allow it even if trying to be politically correct.

  • http://AddaURLtothiscomment Margie Stearns

I believe in this politicaly correct society today it is easy to try to draw others to Christ using modern methods. This however many times will backfire and be seen as compromise, rather than outreach by those Chritians who have stood for Christ in the old fashioned way. That is to say that Christ is the only way; Jn. 14:6. And that though Christ loves all of mankind it is only through the forgiveness of sins; Jn.3:16 that a person can be saved. Remember Christ was a Jew, yet the Jewish people rejected Him, and were insturmental in His death. (Of course it was in God’s plan otherwise the rest of us Gentiles would have not had the opportunity to be saved)The Christian is one who has given their hearts and souls to Christ for the forgiveness of their sins and the hope of eternal life with Him. This is aavaliable to anyone who accepts Him, whether they are Jewish, Islamic or just plain gentile. The Islamic faith did not come into existance until over 600 years after Christ walked among man. One of the main purposes of Muhammad’s reason to begin this faith was to bring the people together and to take out oposing beliefs including Christianity. He did this in those regions by ofting Jews, Christians and anamists and taking their posessions. So quoting the Islamic name of Christ does not really do anything to endear those Chritians who think that this is truly a compromise of faith. I know that if you asked one Iranian pastor who is standing trial and may be executed for continuing to refuse denying Christ, he would see this as so. Christ when He was preparing to die for all of human kind said; “He that denies me/or is ashamed of me before men, will be denied/ashamed before my Father”. Mt.10:33,Mk8:38,Lk.9:26. I know Rick Warren loves the Lord with all of his heart, and seeks ways of bringing those that don’t know Christ to salvation. But I also know that it is easy to try to “unite” words or common beliefs to try to help that non-believer see the commonality of the belief systems. This however only “waters down” the gospel and does not stay true to the Son of God who hung on that cross for our sins and rose the third day. Christ’s life, death and resurrection are not in any way “common” but extraordinary, supernatural and is a one of a kind. That is the way that Jesus Christ must be presented, any other way is just “fluff”.

The Virgin Mary from Medjugorje [an apparition site not yet approved by the Church but will be] has a simple response for the confusion [if you want to call it that] resulting from our desire to be ecumenical or have an ecumenical heart. She said “All religions are dear to God but some have more truth in them than others”.

Rick,Why are doing this? We are christian and they are not. There god is not our God. I’m very disappointed in you.I use to respect you. We are to love them and guide them to Jesus Christ.
I hate the word you use that joins us together with them. I’m a christian lady of 64 yrs. young and God does not ever change. Please go back to your first love, Jesus. I love you but what you are doing is wrong. I do pray for you. In my life, I seen others stray with things like you are doing. Jesus is the truth and the light and there is know other way to our God but through Jesus. Please don’t paint God to be something He’s not.
It’s a free country and you’ve done what you wanted to do But I know a lot of christians that would never want to be call what you are saying. I don’t even want to repeat the name. I’m a christian and pray for the others that have other than Jesus as their Lord and saviour religions. I love them but don’t want to be a part of mohommed, when I have the true God.
Please stop this madness. Are you being blinded? I hate to see you go this way. Remember Jim Baker? I hope your church has not gotten to big for you to remember when God Called you. I’ll be honest with you. I’ll pray like I prayed when Jim Baker got on the wrong path.I was working there. I prayed God if what Jim is doing is not of you tear it down. That is what I’m praying for you. What ever is not of my God Jesus. TEAR IT DOWN.

Dear Rick Warren; Yes, Jesus came for sinners, ALL of us, but did He ever compromise His Father? As you well know, Jesus’ message was that of grace, about our loving Father who is eagerly ready to forgive all those who want to turn from a dead existence by choosing to accept His loving sacrifice of redemption, Jesus. But, did Jesus ever call or associate His Father to Zeus, Diana, Artemis, or any other non-Hebraic name or idol in order to appease or “love” those that He spoke to? Paul didn’t even invite the followers of these pagan gods into the church but rather went out into the streets to preach to them. If a witchcraft occult had a name for Jesus would you give ANY kind of credence or reference to that name when witnessing to them? Of course not. Jesus is the name ABOVE ALL names and EVERY knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord! Isa is NOT Jesus! Allah is NOT Jehovah! Just as much as Baal or satan is NOT God. How can Isa, who, by Islam’s definition, will come back in the end times at the side of the Mahdi(their messiah) to kill Jews and Christians have the same name? That is the Bibles definition of the spirit of anti-Christ! Let God be true and let every man and devil be a liar, there is only ONE Jesus Christ and He alone is Lord!
We are to witness how wonderful Jesus and Our Father is with signs and wonders. T.L. Osborne is a perfect example on how to witness to Hindu’s, Muslims and any other group. For decades he told millions how beautiful the REAL Jesus is, how loving our Father is, by preaching His word, praying for their sick and watching God heal all those who BELIEVED! We win soul’s by uplifting the REAL Jesus not by bringing Him down to man’s or even worst satans level.

Paul, the apostle, spoke of becoming who he needed to be to win the lost. (1 Corinthians 9:19-23)
    Amplified Bible (AMP)
19For although I am free in every way from anyone’s control, I have made myself a bond servant to everyone, so that I might gain the more [for Christ].

20To the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to men under the Law, [I became] as one under the Law, though not myself being under the Law, that I might win those under the Law.

21To those without (outside) law I became as one without law, not that I am without the law of God and lawless toward Him, but that I am [especially keeping] within and committed to the law of Christ, that I might win those who are without law.

22To the weak (wanting in discernment) I have become weak (wanting in discernment) that I might win the weak and overscrupulous. I have [in short] become all things to all men, that I might by all means (at all costs and in any and every way) save some [by winning them to faith in Jesus Christ].

23And I do this for the sake of the good news (the Gospel), in order that I may become a participator in it and share in its [blessings along with you].

Did he become someone else? Did he renounce Christ in order to win the Jews? Of course not! Paul also spoke of being sent to the Gentiles to spread the message. God is not prejudice. He died for all men everywhere and expects His children to become like Him and win them by His love and mercy, not by hate. Also, not in ignorance as some are doing just by going on heresay. Shame! Shame! Rick Warren is doing what he is supposed to do. If you don’t like it, then you need to talk to His Father, the One who put all of us on this planet to love Him, ourselves and others. Don’t get it twisted! Maranatha!(An Aramaic word, translated: O, Lord Come!)

I too love Muslims, as well as Jews & believe their salvation & hope of eternal life is in Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of Almighty God. However, as a fellow Pastor, I do not need to have my friends defend me. If Pastor Warren is against “Chrislam”, then I’m confident that MANY media outlets would give him an opportunity to make a statement as such.
