“Normalization of homosexuality” worries bestselling author

John Piper

As he watches “gay pride” celebrations celebrating the legalization of homosexual marriage in New York – and the constant push in the media and the entertainment industry for acceptance of gay marriage, bestselling author John Piper worries that Americans are being worn down.

The push for the normalization of homosexuality is relentless — and he says generations to come will recognize America’s mistake in accepting what for hundreds of years has been shunned.

“My sense is that we do not realize what a calamity is happening around us,” writes Piper, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis. “Christians, more clearly than others, can see the tidal wave of pain that is on the way. Sin carries in it its own misery.”

He is the author of the bestselling Don’t Waste Your Life, The Passion of Jesus Christ and Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist. He is the author of numerous other books, including the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association’s prestigious Christian Book Award winning What Jesus Demands from the World, Pierced by the Word, Spectacular Sins and God’s Passion for His Glory.

Piper made his observations in his personal blog “Desiring God.” He wrote:

Jesus died so that heterosexual and homosexual sinners might be saved. Jesus created sexuality, and has a clear will for how it is to be experienced in holiness and joy.

For those who have forsaken God’s path of sexual fulfillment, and walked into homosexual intercourse or heterosexual extramarital fornication or adultery, Jesus offers astonishing mercy.

Such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God (1 Corinthians 6:11).

But last weekend this salvation from sinful sexual acts was not embraced. Instead there was massive celebration of sin.

One estimate said that 400,000 people celebrated gay pride in Minneapolis. That’s more than the population of the city. The number is probably inflated, but for the first time in history, it did include the governor of the state, Mark Dayton.

Homosexuality and its celebration are nothing new, Piper noted. What is new is the intense pressure that Americans are feeling — as the news media and entertainment push the acceptance and even normalization of what most Americans privately still consider sin.

“Homosexuality has been here since we were all broken in the fall of man,” Piper wrote. “What’s new is not even the celebration of homosexual sin. Homosexual behavior has been exploited, and reveled in, and celebrated in art, for millennia.”

Piper

“What’s new,” he underscored, “is normalization and institutionalization. This is the new calamity.”

Piper touched on the irony that the Apostle Paul makes it clear in Romans 1:24-27 that homosexual behavior is sin and that “alongside its clearest explanation of the sin of homosexual intercourse stands the indictment of the celebration of it.” Also listed with homosexuality are gossip, slander, insolence, haughtiness, boasting, faithlessness, heartlessness and ruthlessness, he noted.

A case can be made that homosexuality carries such a high degree of condemnation from most pulpits while other offenses on the list are ignored. Gossip runs rampant, It’s the rare pastor who preaches a fiery condemnation of insolent children, haughty adults, boastful athletes, faithless politicians, heartless bankers or ruthless lawyers.

Piper noted that everything on Paul’s list is sin.

Also guilty are those who ”not only do them but give approval to those who practice” these sins, according to Romans 1:29-32. “I tell you even with tears, that many glory in their shame,” Paul writes in Philippians 3:18-19.

And that is where much of America stands today, noted Piper. A Gallup poll last month revealed that for the first time since it began tracking the issue of same-sex marriage in 1996, a majority of Americans (53 percent) believe marriages between same-sex couples should be recognized by law as valid. Moreover, 56 percent of Americans say gay or lesbian relations is morally acceptable, another Gallup poll found in May. Only 39 percent perceive homosexual relations as morally wrong.

That’s very bad for America, wrote Piper. Christians should “weep over our sins. We don’t celebrate them. We turn to Jesus for forgiveness and help. We cry to Jesus, ‘who delivers us from the wrath to come’ (1 Thessalonians 1:10).”

He concludes:

And in our best moments, we weep for the world. In the days of Ezekiel God put a mark of hope “on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in Jerusalem” (Ezekiel 9:4).

This is what I am writing for. Not political action, but love for the name of God and compassion for the city of destruction.

“My eyes shed streams of tears, because people do not keep your law.” (Psalm 119:136)

I don’t understand this “normalization” thing people keep talking about. Homosexuality is already normal to homosexual people.

Hat’s off to Piper a real man of God, he has in this article called it like it is, homosexuality is a sin, homosexual sex is not normal or holy. It (homosexuality) is outside of God’s design for man and woman, sure the government can legislate it into “normality” kids can be seduced into acceptance of the practice, but it still is not normal nor does it have any biological, mental or spiritual good in it.

Just what is “normal” sex anyhow? There are many heterosexual couples who engage in what some would call “not normal” relations! This man doesn’t speak for everyone—fortunately.

Kudos to Piper for adhering to the purity of God’s word! God created us as heterosexual and sees any other sexual choice or behavior as sin. Scripture is clear on that. What most don’t understand is that choosing what one wants where there’s a conflict with what scripture teaches is rebellion against God. Not all choices are conscious, reasoned ones.

The challenge for those who follow Jesus and live His way of life is to truly surrender all that we have and are to Him. That includes our sexuality.

I just want to ask people honestly who are Homosexual, which is 1% or less of the population if they honestly believe that this lifestyle is such a happy & joyful one (that’s what the word Gay means). How could anyone be happy when all their countless friends have died terrible deaths from AIDS? No media ever announces the number of people who are HIV positive, who will most likely get AIDS & face a terrible, painful death. I read a report recently on all the other medical problems that Homosexual sex between men causes (I don’t know about Gay women). I had absolutely no idea; nor do most Americans, on the physical harm & illnesses (a lot more than AIDS) that Homosexual sex between men actually causes. I’m not saying that people themselves are bad or anything dunb like that; but, how can the Gov most of all be “marketing” all day in public schools (or they soon will) to children who would never think up this stuff in the first place? Suppose a young adult is heterosexual; but, his homework assignment (yes, this detail is true)is to go out & have a Homosexual experience, come back to class & write all about it? Suppose these kids listen to this professor & they contract AIDS? Whose fault would it be? I think that these kids here in America have a right to sue a teacher, professor or anyone else with their diagrams on how to perform sexual acts that could very well be a Death Sentence for them. I know that this question may seem ridiculous to many people, but it is an Honest question: How many children are going to die a terrible death because you want to promote this Very Sad (not Gay) nor happy lifestyle upon little children? I don’t mean this to everyone; of course not, but there’s some really bad people in this very country who want to teach children as young as they can get how to perform all kinds of “sex acts; promote promiscuity. I ask all people who are respectable people who happen to be Homosexual; WHAT DO YOU THINK THIS WHOLE SCHEME IS ABOUT? ANSWER: GOING AFTER CHILDREN.

What a shame that LOVE cannot simply be that…I think the only ones worthy of feeling shame are those that continuously judge, denigrate, or point a finger of “sin” at another. Jesus taught love, He taught to put down your stones, and he NEVER, not once in any recorded word spoke of homosexuality as a sin. Let us all celebrate that LOVE should be honored by all who share it. I bless and forgive all of the hatemongers who do so under the cloak of Christianity.

It saddens me that men like this use the Bible as a weapon of hate. I suggest he re-study Titus 3:1-11. I am a gay man and a Christian. Christ forgave my sins by his blood on the cross. Why do humans have such trouble following his example.

I agree with Piper that it is sad. People don’t want to try to uphold what is right or wrong according to the scripture anymore. No one wants to hear anything except approval for whatever they want to do. If God Himself were here pointing out in His Word that their actions were a sin, people would still refuse to hear it and change. Even though He is the Creator and Ruler of all, apparently He doesn’t have the right to tell mankind what to do. This attitude is foretold throughout the New Testament as characterizing the last days. I believe that the Christian attitude of acceptance of sin would fit in what Christ describes in Revelation 3:16 as being “lukewarm”. In the accompanying verses we see how He feels about “lukewarm” Christians.

If we look to the Bible or Scripture to promote fear and hatred that is what is to be found. Christ told his disciples to ‘love as I have loved you’. Ask God to bless those you fear and hate as you ask for God’s same blessing. Let the working of divine LOVE enter your body, mind and spirit to heal and promote kindness and compassion.

I think we all need to try to understand homosexuality a little better, that does not mean that it is not a sin, or that it is normal. How do we love our homosexual brothers, lesbian sisters, those with multiple sexual conflicts or confusion and those who wish to be another sex altogether? One thing for sure I do think we do society a mis-justice to attempt to legislate by force that these conditions are normal. There is a time in young people’s lives that sexuality is confusing and it is in that time that the push to normalize homosexuality will have huge ramifications for a person’s life. It’s already happening.

America was founded on Christian principles. The Bible says it is wrong. Therefore, I believe you must believe all of the Biblical teachings. You can’t take and add to Gods holy word. My concern is if God will say that is enough and then the country will be destroyed for some people that feel they can do whatever they choose and not follow Gods principles. Such behavior is destroying our country and our children. They are our greatest asset. Sad! I feel our only answer is to continue to PRAY for God’s wisdom. Thank-you for taking a stand. Mr. Piper has shared a portion of the ONE TRUTH even though some may not agree. Even if the majority did not agree a portion of the ONE TRUTH nevertheless was shared.

How many sins are cloaked in love?

“A case can be made that homosexuality carries such a high degree of condemnation from most pulpits while other offenses on the list are ignored. Gossip runs rampant, It’s the rare pastor who preaches a fiery condemnation of insolent children, haughty adults, boastful athletes, faithless politicians, heartless bankers or ruthless lawyers”

Homosexuality is all about a “feeling” that is a cheap immitation of love and this “feeling” is not the REAL LOVE for God IS Love – not a feeling at all. Homosexuality is one of the sins that is very tricky and will deceive those even those in the church. The ones deceived are the ones that have not had the revelation (yet anyway) that God IS Love.

To KNOW Him is to Love Him and there is absolutely nothing wrong with people that either have not met Him yet or do not know Him well as long as they have a desire to follow His Spirit in their journey on earth and beyond. There is always more in Him. He forgives us and fills us with His Love (Himself in us).

Sin NOT and follow Him. In the moments we do choose to fall into sin REPENT! and receive his Forgiveness. Keep your eyes on Jesus and follow Him!

I Love him with His Love He has filled me. Father God Almighty – Your Love back atchya.

Peace in Christ!

In Paul’s time, genetics and other knowledge was not known. Yes, God did create humans to be male and female. That’s the perfect way. But he also created humans not to be born with Down Syndrome, cleft palates, and many other things. If homosexuality is genetic and I think it is—love is love. We have no right to make anyone feel less than God’s child. Christianity has always put too much emphasis on sex and not enough on love and relationships. Homosexuals are required to keep the moral law also and not be bed-hopping—to which most Christian homosexuals agree.

Homosexuality is not and never will be “normal” anymore than pedophilia will be (although they think they are normal just as homosexuals do). There are standards for normality and neither of these meet the standard. Can you change the standard? You can try, as they have – that’s why they want to have “marriage” and not civil unions. Civil Union says “We are different” and like it or not, they are different than the established “normal”. If they think abnormal sexual practices, the inability to procreate naturally and being against God’s law doesn’t make them “abnormal” – Well – they know better, just choose to be the way their emotions take them – like a pedophile does. Lack of emotional control leads to rapists, murderers, peodphiles and many other things. Do you consider these behaviors “normal”? They may make it “socially acceptable” with some, but once we open Pandora’s Box, where do we stop? Pedophiles will be the next group demanding they be classified “normal”. It’s just their “love” and “expressing their emotions”. Aren’t we all supposed to have the same “rights”?

You can claim to be both gay and a Christian, and while that’s possible, I cannot see you could say that God approves or somehow looks the other way “in love” (which isn’t really love at all). Read the Word yourself, Romans 1:18-32, which emphasis on verses 26 and 27. The Bible speaks for itself. If God spoke through man to write the Scriptures, and Jesus and the Father are one, how can you say Jesus never argued against homosexuality?

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

The Bible has been used and misused throughout the centuries for personal gain. It was used as to enslave africans and many other races. It was used to support hatred and the killing of Jews. It has also been used to keep women “in their place.” Funny thing is that when Jesus came the Old Testament law was abolished and while Jesus & God are one it’s interesting that Jesus never said anything about being Gay or homosexual. Could it be that Romans, which was written by Paul, was speaking on his own. Afterall it was Paul who said he felt men should not get married.
