Tweet of Mickey & Minnie in Muslim attire stirs Egyptian fury

Naguib Sawiris

A Christian businessman who is one of Egypt’s richest entrepreneurs, has run afoul of the internet’s social media after sending out a message of Mickey and Minnie Mouse dressed as conservative Muslims.

The cartoon, which was already circulating by email and on various websites, shows the Disney cartoon figures in full Muslim attire. Mickey is wearing a traditional Islamic robe with a full beard. Minnie Mouse is in a niqab – a full-body veil – with just her eyes showing, but identifiable by her trademark ears and familiar pink hair ribbon

“Telecoms mogul and Coptic Christian Naguib Sawiris apologized for re-posting the images on Twitter a few days ago, saying he meant no offense,” reported BBC News. “But several Islamic lawyers have filed a formal complaint and there are calls for a boycott of his businesses.”

They don’t understand that it is a compliment to be identified with America’s Mickey and Minnie Mouse. :) I hope Minnie’s lovely long eyelashes were seen through the material she looked through.

Bunch of bologna! They really need to get real about something to be upset about. Mickey & Minnie in Muslim clothes is a problem?

So Mickey and Minnie are offensive to Egyptian Muslims. I guess this means no Disneyland Cairo?

Also, does anyone know where the image can be found? It’s hard to justify one’s anger over an image if no one can see it.

Thanks Rob K. and I was right—I think she looks cute. Highlights Minnie’s eyes. :o)

I was a bit underwhelmed with the Minnie image (just looks like somebody playing around with Photoshop to me), but it doesn’t seem that offensive. What some sites are showing as the Mickey image was a bit disturbing though. I wouldn’t want to get my picture taken with that guy. Still, I don’t think it warrants a boycott.
