Legislators include religious exceptions within New York’s gay marriage bill

New York state’s Marriage Equality Act passed the state’s senate Friday night in a vote of 33-29, making the Empire State the sixth U.S. state or district to legalize same-sex marriage — joining Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. The bill stalled for much of the week as state lawmakers debated the extent to which religious beliefs on homosexuality should be protected under any new state legislation.

The so-called “religious exemptions” are entirely unnecessary. Not a single Catholic priest has EVER been “forced” to marrz a non-Catholic OR a divorced person – nor WILL they ever. Likewise, not a single Orthodox Jewish rabbi has EVER been “forced” to marry an inter-faith couple. And not a single clergy from the “Church” of the Aryan Nations has EVER been “forced” to marry an inter-racial couple.

It,s called freedom of religion folks. Almost ALL of America has had this freedom since the Constitution was written. And NOW, so do gay citizens. And the “religious” haters HATE that.

the religious exemption is a very good thing and well worded. I remember interviewing a homosexual that said he did not like to have sex with other homosexuals he instead like to trick heterosexuals that is how he got his satisfaction. It would only be a matter of time without this language that churches would run into trouble from homosexuals who would not be satisfied without suing a church for not marring them.

ck,

Please explain HOW a gay couple could “sue” a faith like, say, the Catholic Church, for not marrying them when a non-Catholic or a divorced person could not. Or, an inter-faith couple could “sue! the Orthodox Jewish faith for not marrying them. You seem to fervently believe that this could happen, and yet it has not. Because until you can explain this discrepancy, you simply will not be believed.

P. S. Your “example” has nothing to do with the subject.

God has the first and final say in this matter. He has already stated plenty of examples in His Word how he does and will deal with this subject. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind what will happen to them eventually when and if they transgress God Word for any reason. We are saved by His grace and the shed blood of the Sacrificial Lamb, Jesus. That doesn’t give us license to continue to sin and take Gods Holy Word lightly. Anyone who gets involved in the same sex marriage issue in a manner that goes against Gods Word, will ultimately be held accountable. We need to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. God is not mocked. What ever a man sews, that he shall also reap. God has said so. His Word does not return void. It will accomplish that which it sets out to do. Beware all you who mock God.

This law is how it should be. We have no right to force beliefs on anyone else. And in New York, it is clearly defined that gays have no right to force their marriage on any church or business entity that doesn’t choose to be involved!

Yes the homo’s are people and they need to act like people. Some do act decent but mosts of them are “looney tunes”.This has blown way out of line and needs to stop. Homo’s are no better then anyone else and do not deserve any more then what I have. And New York no less what is the matter with them? Are they nuts or something? Never blame your maker! Your here on Gods behave and no matter how hard things get you are all guided by none other than Our Lord! Why are things going crazy in the world today? Clergy have never been required to marry anyone. This extra piece that has been duct-taped onto the legislation is simply a way to appease people who have no idea what they are actually talking about. But if that does appease them, then the extra bit of work is worth the effort. I have had to tell heterosexual couples that I will not marry them because they were not ready. That would not change with a homosexual couple either. I have been trusted by the state and the congregation I serve with this authority and judgment.

In Barbara AM’s insulting rant she included, “Homo’s are no better then anyone else and do not deserve any more then what I have.” That is indeed explicitly true. Now the entire population of NY has the same rights; none diminished, and none enhanced.

As for the rest of the hate-filled raging and thoughtless, careless, and useless postings – anger begets anger, pain begets pain, fear begets fear. Until you lose your anger, pain, and fear you will forever live in your own wasted emotional shell. That is what is truly sad. God wants so much more for all of humanity, hoping we will someday live full lives of love and peace, trusting that is possible. Self-righteous indignation and self-serving ignorance only shows God will be waiting a lot longer.

What a confusing and tough issue! The Bible does say that it is wrong for the same sex to lie together…it plainly says it. However, who would choose to be homosexual? Who chooses to be born ugly or fat? Nobody chooses to be born to be castigated by society. And is one sin worse than another? Everyone knows someone who is gay. Do you attack them constantly? A cousin, son, daughter, nephew, brother, sister, a friend you grew up with…do you hate them? You probably make exceptions for that person. It’s all so confusing and sad. It’s a mystery question for God to explain to me someday!

Hey, I would just like to remind the person who claimed that “almost ALL of America has had this freedom since the constitution was written” that miscegenation (race mixing, cohabitation, sex etc.) laws were not removed from state law until the case of Loving V. Virginia in 1967. Even after this ruling, South Carolina did not officially remove it from their constitution until 1998 and Alabama until 2000. This was in my lifetime and would mean my marriage to my husband would be illegal! There really are no valid comparisons between racial minorities and the gay community! When I walk into a room the FIST thing that people notice about me is that I am black!!! If someone is gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or whatever else-YOU MUST BE TOLD or how would you even know?!!! Ultimately, God will decide what happens, and we as Christians, should remember that we will be judged as we judge!!! Remove the plank from your own eye!!! There are so many other things in this world that need our attention and prayer!! Let these choices be made by the people who want it and focus your energy somewhere else!!!

To the poster that uses the title “your name,” if this law was not needed to protect religions, then why does it bother you? Since, as you claim, it changes nothing, why are you so upset?

Everything is done in increments…. First, it as to suggest homosexuality is some how “normal” when it isn’t. Then this idea was rammed down people’s throats ad nauseum until it was generally accepted. Then it was to claim homosexuals had a right to have their perversion “legalized” via marriage.

It would only have been a matter of time before the leftist politicians claimed religions HAD to perform gay ceremonies or lose the ability to use federal money for outreach programs and such. They could also lose their tax exempt status.

This is already the avenue taken by the left to force religions to accept abortion and the “morning after” pill. They are threatening churches with losing their tax exempt status if their affiliated hospitals don’t offer abortions or the morning after pill. So don’t say it can’t happen if they aren’t protected from the left and homosexual marriage.

I don’t agree with allowing marriage between same sex couples. You can call these unions whatever you like but it isn’t what God described. Why not come up with another name for whatever these folks are trying to do. As for the God-fearing public, add this to the list of unGodly acts that you will not participate in. Be friendly but stay out of relationship situations with these couples. A woman cannot force you to call her sir, even if she has transgender surgery, nor can a man. You are whatever God made you even though you die your hair, change eye color, remove your penis, or put the same sex on your arm. It’s kind of like calling a tomato a vegetable even though it’s actually a fruit. Maybe that’s a bad example. Gays probably love that one. tomato:vegetable :: gay couples:marriage A commonly accepted mistake.
Spend your valuable time praying for God-clarity and appropriate behavior for yourself and others. Love them anyway but don’t encourage the behavior and speak lovingly of the need to change when you have the opportunity.

This isn’t freedom of religion. This is freedom from religion. There is nothing religious about gay unions. What religion has a tenet that support same sex coupling? Religions are man made so it’s only a matter of time before a cult which support this act becomes accepted as a religion and will give the coupling an appropriate name. God has already coined marriage as being between a man and a woman.

Those who have faith in God, no matter what your religion, will steer clear of these acknowledging these acts as anything but sinful, no matter how nice the couple is, how hot the sex may be, or how easily some people seem to live this way. Many other sins have the same intrigue.

Pray. Fortify your mind with the Word. Resist the devil and he will flee! Try it.

Being denied your rights guaranteed by the constitution is absolutely wrong! And all of you are absolutely right that God says homosexuality is a sin. My point is until you are ready to take away t basic human rights of every category of sinner (ie: liars, those who do not honor their father & mother, murderers, adulterers, those who use the Lords name in vain or don’t keep the sabbath holy to name a few) then you cannot justify denying homosexuals their RIGHT to marry!! Your argument isn’t valid when you chose to discriminate against one group!? God calls us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves…He didnt include “unless they’re gay” in that scripture!! God is our judge…quit condemning people & begin showing them how God would treat them. I’ll worry about my salvation & you worry about yours…you just as much of a sinner as I!!

Actually, it says it is wrong for men to lie with men “AS WITH WOMEN” (why do selective fundaMENTALists always forget that part?). The only men that lie with women are heterosexuals, and this is clearly God’s admonition for them not to lie with men that way – namely, as objects. (That’s how they lay with women back then in the Bronze Age. Women were property and not much else.) And that really would be an abomination – to treat another human (well, male human) that way.

DO BETTER!
