Church of England to Consider Women Bishops — Again

posted by aroan

LONDON (RNS/ENInews) The contentious issue of women bishops will once again be debated by the Church of England’s General Synod when delegates and bishops convene in York on Friday (July 9), years after the issue was first raised.
Christina Rees, a campaigner for the ordination of women bishops in the Church of England, told ENInews, “It’s going to be a historic synod.
Fifteen hours of debate. That’s a marathon by anyone’s standards.”
Women can be ordained as priests in the Church of England but they may not hold the higher office of bishop, even though the Synod has given support to the principle of changing church law to allow female bishops.
American-born Rees, who is director of the Churchfield Trust, a group dedicated to advancing women’s ministries, said the archbishops of Canterbury and York (the church’s top two officials), had signaled their intent to amend the women-bishops law to help keep traditionalists from leaving the church.
“I hope that none of the amendments change that really important principle of `yes’ to women bishops,” she said. “However, if it is voted down, or it doesn’t go through, we will have to pick up the pieces and start again in November,” when a new General Synod begins.
Religion correspondent Ruth Gledhill, writing in The Times of London newspaper, reported that one of Britain’s leading women rabbis, Alexandra Wright, had written to Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, urging him “for goodness sake” to get on with ordaining women bishops.
Wright said that since women were ordained, “We find ourselves besieged by young families.”
The rabbi told Gledhill, “Considering the dominant force of male leadership and authority in rabbinic Judaism … it might be surprising to learn that the roof has not caved in.”

So far women have only proved to weaken the church and homosexualize it.

  • nnmns

Kick them out, then! Why even let them in if they only weaken and homosexualize the church?

  • jestrfyl

Aw, ck – did you see we agreed on the RCC church’s role in Cuba? Now here we part ways again.
A woman is a priest or she isn’t. If she cannot become a bishop, then there is a two tiered system to the priesthood, with one tier more authoritative than the other. I am sad (but not teary – pun intended) for the C of E if they feel they must honor a pre-20th century tradition. Of course, we will be glad to welcome their well educated, trained, ready-to-be ordained female (and dissatisfied male) priests into the UCC. We affirm over and again that God made all people equal. As Paul said, “no male or female, no slave or free, etc…” I may not always agree with Paul, but here it got it exactly so.

  • nnmns

I understand this is a prelude to (a very belated) warmer relations between our countries. I’m sure it helps that we’ve stopped trying to assassinate their leader.

  • nnmns

Woops, previous post in the wrong place. Sorry.

  • cknuck

I don’t know of a time I disagree with Paul, yes we all are equal in God’s sight but God made people specific and we are so far away the design right now that our world is in trouble. Women should not want to do what men do and men should not want to do what women do. God made man the leader and when man is right then he makes the best leader. Women should not be trying to be men as soldiers, police officers or leaders. Yes there is occasionally a woman who is qualified but not all. Just like men will never have a baby (although if some folks had their way) women should never have to defend the home. I heard it said one way, “when I hear a noise downstairs in the middle of the night I don’t give the weapon to my wife and say go check it our dear” The gender message we are sending to our kids is confusing as hell.

  • Glenn

Something tells me the very first one will just happen to be a Lesbian? That would make this a real comedy! Stay tuned for more “Politically Correct” Mind numbing non-sensical garbage from the Church of England..

  • pagansister

cknuck, the world isn’t in trouble because there are women in leadership roles in churches (the ones who have enough sense to realize that women are equal to men anyhow). We’re in wars currently in Afganistan and Iraq because of MEN who feel their version of a religion is better than the other folks version…not because of WOMEN. So far I haven’t noticed any gender confusion among children. Kids aren’t stupid…they understand and accept unless someone prejudices them against certain things.
Glenn…and what is wrong if indeed the first bishop might be a lesbian? That’s a problem? Certainly not.

  • pagansister

And I hope the C of E does vote to allow women as bishops, since they were smart enough to allow women to be priests. There should be room for advancement for the women just like the men.

  • nnmns

“when man is right then he makes the best leader”
Well, duh. When woman is right she makes the best leader, too.
But we often have trouble telling who’s right (e.g. a large bunch of fools making GWB president of the USA). It’s hard to find good leaders and we’d be idiots to throw out half the candidates.

  • cknuck`

pagan your “kids aren’t stupid” claim is being proven everyday to be wrong, and as to gender confusion it’s a little late when adults go craving up people and pumping them full of hormones and forcing folk to call them the opposite sex I’d say there is plenty of confusion to go around. People will not even be truthful about sexuality, neither to themselves or their kids. Man cannot make a man a woman nor vise versa!

  • Mordred08

“when adults go craving up people and pumping them full of hormones and forcing folk to call them the opposite sex I’d say there is plenty of confusion to go around”
No one’s gonna force you to be nice to transgender people cknuck. But why do you have to hate on them so damn much? Odds are you’ll never run into one anyway. And what’s up with all the women bashing coming from you lately? Trouble at home, perhaps?

  • JohnQ

    cknuck-
The old ways do change over time. Most of us no long fast on Fridays. Most do not even fast during lent. Most Americans and British (regardless of gender) can now read and write. Fortunately, most of us do not need to milk the cows and tend the hens to have milk and eggs. Few of us still ride horses to commute. Most of us have phones (OMG…and they are even cell phones) and most have tv’s and radios.
Few women now die in child birth, most of our children live to adulthood, and few American and British die from lack of food.
Yes, the old ways are a changing.
There are five states with legal same-gender marriage…and, just this last week a Federal Judge in MA ruled that the Fed Gov can not discriminate against the spouses in same-gendered marriage. And yet, life goes on in our great nation.
    Peace!

CK represents all that I hate most about Xianity.

  • cknuck

Mordred you have never read anything I have said that included hate, i don’t hate anyone but I do insist on telling the truth about things. Just because a person disagrees and points out the truth does not mean hate but it becomes easy to ignore the truth if you paint it as hate. It’s a nice tactic but you can fool only some of the people.
Nice one Scott R. then I must be doing something right. One thing hates the truth Scott.

  • nnmns

cknuck people choose what they consider to be truth. Some use high quality procedures to choose and are considered wise. Your procedure to decide what to consider true seems to just consist of consulting your biases. I really pity anyone who would consider you wise.

  • Mordred08

“i don’t hate anyone but I do insist on telling the truth about things”
You go out of your way to attack your favorite targets. And in your case, it’s usually the easy targets, like transgender people, who are one of the most hated groups in the world because they’re considered “okay” to hate. And I call BS on your so-called honesty. Like I said, no one forces you to be nice to these people and call them by the gender they identify with. You sound like the kind of jerk who would call them by the opposite gender out of spite and then whine “i’m just telling the truth” when somebody gets offended.
And you still haven’t answered my question about your issues with women.

  • cknuck

Mordred that does not make sense there is one truth, and I have no issues with women, I love women I think they are wonderful. I think there are women roles and men roles just as Gos designed. If a car tire goes flat and a man sends the woman out to fix it everybody would agree that is wrong, except I fear not too many men can even change a tire anymore. My observation is that the world is out of whack. That is the truth, now do you best to pervert it.

  • cknuck

nnmns quote, “I really pity anyone who would consider you wise.”
Well nnmns you will have no reason for self-pity. All true wisdom comes from God.

  • nnmns

Here’s the truth. cknuck hates homosexuals because he detects homosexuality in himself so he’s afraid. And fear so easily generates hate.

  • cknuck

nice nnmns just goes to show when you can’t win an argument you resort to the level at which you operate best. How’s things down there?

  • nnmns

I see you don’t deny it. It’s the best explanation for your hatred. And you’re not as unusual in that as you may think; I understand there are many like you.

  • cknuck

even with you sitting at your terminal wear your condom over your head it is still no protection to the rest of the world from your infection of misinformation. Let your imagination roll nnmns it still does your argument no good.

  • cknuck

    should be wearing

  • Mordred08

    cknuck:
“I think there are women roles and men roles just as Gos designed. If a car tire goes flat and a man sends the woman out to fix it everybody would agree that is wrong, except I fear not too many men can even change a tire anymore.”
I didn’t realize it was my god-given duty to fix my own car, instead of paying someone else to do it.
“even with you sitting at your terminal wear your condom over your head”
    …What?

  • cknuck

keep talking Mordred you make my point

  • JohnQ

    cknuck-
Stand back and read your posts.
You do an excellent job of demonstrating the absurdity of your own arguments.
We know, you do not hate gays/lesbians/transgendered people. And, I do believe that in your mind that you do not think your posts are hateful. However to most gays/lesbians/transgendered people your posts do indeed appear to be hateful. You state that your beliefs are based on the Bible and God’s design. Then you quote Biblical verse and ascribe a meaning to your quoted verses that is at the very least, contradictory to the teaching Our Lord and then insist that Our Lord believes/believed as you do.
We know that you believe females are not inferior to males. Ah but then, you attempt to limit females to some specific role that you believe is acceptable. So, females are not inferior…but, you as a man want to limit their role…against the will of many females. To most people that would appear that you are indeed suggesting that males must be superior to females as males somehow have the right to dictate to females what they can and can not do.
I have always wondered, using your logic, why a male (superior) would want to interact with females (inferior) when there are so many other men in the world. I mean I understand why a man might want to keep a female around…..having unpaid servants/slaves might appeal to some. But, why actually interact with these inferior beings beyond allowing them to serve?
For the record, not only do I personally believe that males and females are equal….I respect each individual female’s right to freely make her own choices….just as I do a male.
And, not only do I believe that heterosexuals are equal to homosexuals, I full respect a heterosexual’s right to limit themselves to sex/marriage with the opposite gender. I know the world will not fall apart if straight people are allowed to continue to marry and raise children*. I do believe that most gay people think as I do on this issue. I do often wonder why some straight people do not show me and other gay/lesbian/bi/transgendered people the same respect. Perhaps some straight people have inferiority complexes.
*Yes, I know that there are countless cases of child abuse and domestic violence, but I do not think that reflects the intentions and abilities of all straight people. Though, I do wish straight people would put a little more forethought into the consequences of their rampant sexual activities. There just are not enough gays/lesbians in the country to adopt and care for all the innocent children that straight people continue to create and then not care for.
    Peace!

  • nnmns

cknuck knows what’s right and if, for instance, Jesus disagreed with it, cknuck would just invent a new Jesus. Actually he’s probably done that a few times in his life. But any Christian does that. He or she, just like cknuck, chooses what parts of the Bible to emphasize and what parts to ignore.
It’s just that many Christians make better choices than our cknuck made. One disadvantage cknuck has is that he surely recognizes some latent homosexuality in himself and for whatever reason he can’t handle that so he turns it into hatred of homosexuals. And he thinks he can find an excuse for that in his Bible. So he does.
We can pity cknuck but we should recognize the hate he spews for what it is.

  • Scott R.

    CK,
When you have the truth, I won’t have any problems with you. But you don’t, because you are a Xian. Xianity is blasphemy and the enemy of the Jewish people.
    You’re typical.
No not all National Socialists are white.

  • cknuck

It’s amazing the only hate demonstrated here is SR and his hate for Christians but it is easily tolerated as long as he supports homosexuality, as atheism and other various forms of anti-Christ.

  • cknuck

If you can paint truth as hate then the truth does not have to be accepted.

  • jestrfyl

I guess Episcopal women are so powerful that Episcopal men have to exclude them, for fear of losing control and relinquishing authority. Now that’s ironic – and pretty amusing.

  • cknuck

It easier for short-sighted folk to see that each cigarette a person smoke takes a measured amount of time from their lives than to see that each of our conveniences take a measured amount of time from the life of the earth. Women no longer have to be in the house because conveniences have evolved them out. Strangers raise our kids our diets leads us to battle with obesity and poor health and the air is not fit nor is our water. When we lose control of the government strong men will have to rise and the glue that will hold such forces together will be faith. America is so lacking of both strong men and faith we will look less like America than ever before.
