Ethan Hawke’s “Boyhood” Beatles Black Album

posted by Nell Minow

For his extraordinary 12-year filming project, “Boyhood,” Richard Linklater encouraged his actors to bring elements of their lives over that period to the characters they played.  When Ethan Hawke said that he had prepared a mix-CD for his own children that he called “The Black Album,” Linklater had his character Mason make the same gift to Mason, Jr.  “The Black Album” is what Hawke thought the Beatles might have made after “Let it Be” if they hadn’t split up.  “When you mix up their work, though, when you put them side by side and let them flow — they elevate each other, and you start to hear it: T H E  B E A T L E S.”

      Very cool, thanks!

Ethan Hawke’s well-intentioned effort is actually a rather feeble echo of what’s in Jeff Walker’s 2010 book ‘Let’s Put the Beatles Back Together Again 1970-2010: How to Assemble & Appreciate the 2nd Half of the Beatles’ Legacy’.

Thanks for that info! Sounds fascinating — I’ll have to check it out.
