Trailer: ‘The Artist’

posted by Nell Minow

“The Artist” is a brand new black and white silent movie.  It has James Cromwell, John Goodman, and Penelope Ann Miller in supporting roles and two actors new to America in a story about a silent-era star whose career crumbles when movies get sound just as the career of a young actress he befriended takes off.  It got raves at the Cannes festival and I can’t wait to tell you more about it.

Sounds like it is based on the real life tragic love story of Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. The basic dramatic paradigm was utilized by Hollywood later, with plot modifications avoiding the silent to talkies crux of tragedy replaced by a more internal status shift,i.e., rising to fading talent, in the “Star Is Born” film.

Thanks, ee mann! And on the real-life story of Eddie Cantor and Ruby Keeler and others as well. The movie’s story is like a cross between “A Star is Born” and “Singin’ in the Rain” but it is fresh and touching and all-around terrific.

The Maze Runner
Yes, it's another dystopic YA trilogy (actually, there's a fourth volume, a prequel), and yes, only a teenager with fabulous cheekbones can save the day. But "The Maze Runner" is not a lesser repeat. It is a worthy addition to the genre, an absorbing drama with surprising turns and even more surpris
