Movies About Writers

posted by Nell Minow

Thanks to Kaitlyn Cole for sending me this list of 50 great movies about writers. I especially like the way it is broken down into categories — about writing (“Wonder Boys”), writers being bad (“Sunset Boulevard,” “The Shining”), and real-life writers. If I could, I’d add a category of writers being good (lots of great crusading journalist movies like “Call Northside 777″ and “All the President’s Men,” both based on true stories), and documentaries about writers, including films about Hunter S. Thomson, Charles Bukowski, Ayn Rand, and Alan Ginsberg.

Hi – I’m looking for a movie, were I don’t remember any of the actors or the name of the movie. Here is the plot: A writer gets ripped off by another writer of his manuscript who gets famous after publishing under his name. The ripped off writer decides to kill the thief and both die in the action to do so. In their after life they end up on an island were celebrities live ( Hemingway too) and the story continues…with people disappearing…etc…not more memory left. Any idea what I’m talking about. (It’s not “Deathtrap”)… please let me know…

Telling Time in "All That Jazz"
One of my favorite writers provides insights into one of my favorite (if flawed) movies -- Matt Zoller Seitz created a beautiful video essay about Bob Fosse's autobiographical "All That Jazz" for the Criterion Edition, and then they were unable to use it due to rights problems with the movie clips h
