‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ — Anti-Semitism Episode

posted by Nell Minow

Hulu has an episode of the classic “Mary Tyler Moore Show” about a woman who does not want Mary’s friend Rhoda (Valerie Harper) to come to her club because she is Jewish. The woman is played by Mary Frann, who would go on to play the wife of innkeeper Dick Loudon in “Newhart.” It is worth watching the show today to begin a conversation with older kids and teens about what has and has not changed and what they think about the way Mary responded when she found out why Rhoda was not welcome at the club. What would you do?

Sadly, Mary Frann is no longer with us, died at a way too young 55 of a heart attack. Loved her on Newhart.

Thanks, Dave. I loved her on “Newhart” and on “Days of Our Lives.”

Writer/director Ted Melfi got Bill Murray to appear in his first film by calling him. Murray does not have an agent or a manager. He has an 800 number. And Melfi left message after message until Murray finally called back and asked Melfi to pick him up at the airport. Apparently his pitch skills (an
