Mormon Inquiry

LDS General Conference

posted by Dave Banack

It happens twice a year, in April and October, as the senior leaders of the LDS Church speak to the general membership of the LDS Chruch in person (to those attending at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City) and via radio, television, and the Internet. The big news: Elder Neal L. Anderson was called as an LDS apostle, filling out that senior quorum to its full complement of twelve. Until now, Elder Anderson has been serving as the senior member of the Presidency of the Seventy (another senior LDS leadership quorum).

For the very best real-time Conference coverage, visit the Messenger and Advocate blog. If you prefer to twitter, visit the BCC comment threads. I’m traveling this weekend, but I’ll be posting on some Conference talks next week. Transcripts of Conference talks are generally posted at LDS.org on Wednesday or Thursday.

I’m amazed at the fact theres a Mormon blog on beliefnet. The LDS churdh teaches alot about family unity and values. I feel that there Leadership has been profound in their teachings of Jesus Christ our Lord. For a member to follow all the teachings is difficult at times. But Christ never said the road to heaven would be easy, it just would be worth it. I would invite all people everywhere out there to take the time research what the Lord wants you to become. Taking Baby steps and finding out whats really important in life. Family, friends, your beliefs and values. Jesus, “Stands at the door and knocks, he that openeth the door I will sup with him and he will sup with me.” I envite those who Love life, to realize how it would be to live for Eternity? Gods love is endless in purpose and design take time to investigate the LDS Church. Your life will be enhanced and Blessed, God Bless America.. Extreme.

I wanted to add that all things are made perfect in time. Thats part of our reason for being here on this Earth. God Bless those who will hear his voice and know his name. We all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. Take time to know God and his son Jesus Christ.. Extreme.

The meanings of Zion
This is the third post on Richard L. Bushman's Mormonism: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2008). [See Part 1 and Part 2.] In Chapter Three, Bushman reviews the several meanings of the term "Zion" in LDS doctrine and thinking. The Mormon sense of Zion has no real parallels in Protestant though

A statistical portrait of Mormons
The Pew Forum recently issued a detailed summary of survey information about Mormons gathered as part of a much larger survey of religious life in the United States. It is a very readable summary, noting that Mormons comprise 1.7% of adults in the US; 35% of Mormon adults live in Utah and 13% live i

July 24th: Pioneer Day in Utah
July 24th is a state holiday in Utah, designated Pioneer Day. It commemorates the entry of the first wagon train of Mormons into the Salt Lake Valley in the summer of 1847. They came down Emigration Canyon, somewhat north of the present I-80 corridor which comes down Parley's Canyon. Brigham Young w

Finding heretics in strange places
A very interesting post at Mormon Matters, reviewing a 1989 book titled "Will the Real Heretics Please Stand Up?" The book was written by an attorney who grew up a Jehovah's Witness, then became an Evangelical Christian. That lasted until he conducted a thorough reading the original writings of the
