Re: the Golden Compass– thank you for a thoughtful perspective on this issue. I am always disturbed by calls for a boycott or censorship of films or books. My local pastors used the controversy over the Da Vinci Code to inform us in ways to have meaningful dialog with others over the issues raised by the book and movie. They told us that the controversy was an opporturnity to witness to people who might not ordinarily have a spiritual discussion with us. I think that the Golden Compass is another opportunity to have meaningful dialog with our children, but also, with others in our community.

Martha,
I could not agree more with your stand on freedome of expression.
Not having seen the movie I can’t comment on the ending where you say “God” is killed. I’m reminded of the Buddhist statement, “If you meet the Buddha on the road kill it.” At first I couldn’t understand, but now I believe I do. When we come to worship the symbol of our faith rather than the “IT” it represents, then the meaning of IT is lost.

Asking for Help
