Breathe Card #42 in The Conscious Living Wisdom Card (Special Moms’ Edition)

Today I drew the Breathe Card.

Breathing is a great tool that can help your child manage everything from fear to hyperactivity. The key to getting your child to use tools is to have them see how much using the tool can benefit them. Otherwise, it just seems like something your trying to make them do, and child psychology will tell you, they’ll want to do the opposite.

For Your Child

Children especially will hold their breath when they are afraid or in pain.  Teaching your child to breathe through those situations will support her* during moments of crisis and well into the future.  Teaching her to breathe deeply will help her develop tools that provide calming and soothing benefits.  If she is sleepless, restless or hyperactive, employing deep breathing may be the key.  To teach her how to deep breathe, have her lie on her back and rest her hands on her belly button and on her chest.  Have her focus on breathing all the way down in to her belly and filling up like a balloon until she feels her chest rise.  Then have her deflate the balloon by exhaling her breath, allowing it to roll from her chest down to the belly. You may also consider this card as a message to give your child some breathing room.  Have you evaluated your child’s abilities recently?  Have you forgotten to grow with your child?  It is easy to get stuck in seeing your child at a certain age and continue to do things that may be no longer necessary or appropriate.  Take this opportunity to review your interactions with your child, with an eye to giving her some breathing room.

**A note about The Conscious Living Guide Wisdom Cards (Special Moms’ Edition): There are 42 cards in the deck and a guide book. The guide book includes insight for you which is meant to help you live life more consciously as well as insight for your child, which is meant to help support you in your Conscious Parenting. *Additionally, to avoid the awkwardness of saying he/she all the time, I have picked one gender to identify in each card.
