My favorite little French saint – St. Therese of Lisieux – said, “If I am willing to serenely bear the burden of being displeasing to myself, I will be a pleasant place of shelter for Jesus.”

Triumphalism never bears that burden – whether it is Christian or not. The kind of triumphalism displayed by many Christians in this country is nothing less than a scandal to the Gospel.

Amen. Somehow we have been sold the lie that all Jesus requires of us is that we utter a “sinner’s prayer” and then live a nice, conservative life. Horrifying.
