Newt Gingrich presents: The End of the World as he knows it!

And by “World,” Newt means America.

His movie, going straight to video for the price of $19.95 plus $4 shipping & handling, is called America at Risk.

My favorite part of the trailer is watching Newt’s wife (skinny woman in the pink dress standing next to him) stare at the teleprompter like it’s the anti-Christ.

The “end of the world” is in hot demand right now. It’s sad. Nothing but fear. Because fear controls people. It manipulates people. And gosh, why do anything to solve America’s problems when a slogan like “The End is Near” can win you an election?

Hopefully, it’ll die down for a bit after the midterms. At least until May 2011 (Cuz that’s when the end is supposed to be here.)

This video made me think of this quote/interview. The last paragraph is key.

Why, of course, the people don’t want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.

Gilbert: There is one difference. In a democracy, the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars.

Göring: Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

From Gustave Gilbert’s, Nuremberg Diary (1947)…This is an interview with Hermann Goring, Nazi Party Leader

Fear is a very very powerful tool and it is used over and over and over again. Sadly we keep falling for the same old tricks.

Against all of this fear, the command to love your neighbor looks pretty silly, doesn’t it?

Somehow, each generation comes up with a new thing to fear, that will destroy our way of life. As Christians, I wonder if God is pleased with the way that many of our supposed leaders spend more time making us afraid?

I think the worst part about this, aside from the scorched-earth politics, is the fact that this worldview is equated with Christianity despite it’s being absolutely contrary to everything the Bible teaches.

Fear. Xenophobia. Anger. This is what passes for “Christianity” now. Well, Americanity is more accurate. When your “religion” claims Christ while really just advancing conservative, American-nationalist politics (see: Glenn Beck, Sarah Palkin, et al) it’s Americanity.

Amen. We have created Christianity over in the image of America rather than allowing Christ to shape us.
Fear is a great motivator. It is the tool used to counter the Love of God’s Kingdom most often it seems.

I’m assuming we can avoid all that stuff if we elect Newt president, right?

The terrorist threat against us is real. I do think we should work to eliminate that threat, not provide sugar and lollipops to our enemies but to provide for them swift deterrence in any action against the United States and our interests.

I do think this nation has lost focus and vision and that we are in for another terror attack because we have lost vision, courage and just plain guts to stand up and fight for our ideals.

I do think we need to be free from fear but we also need to walk with wisdom.

Something I think we are currently lacking as a public.

Well, maybe not sugar and lollipops but how about love? Fighting fire with fire only makes a bigger fire.
