Wow.

Much gratitude to @hughlh for sending this picture to me.

Our options are only between trendy and overly truthful? How about either completely clueless or straight up Rock ‘n Roll!?

Hey guys!

My name is Rob James, and I actually work for Wake.

We are aware of what WTF originally stands for, and that is actually why we chose it. It is something that our target audience is VERY familiar with. We are a progressive college group located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and we know that any college-aged person is a phone-weilding, text-sending machine. So why not use what they are familiar with?

We have taken precautions so that nobody gets the wrong intention. For example, it will never be seen on any of our media as a question. It is always a statement. WTF is Wake. Worship+Teaching+Friends is Wake. Those are the three standards we have based our college group on.

We are a place of worship. We come together as a church body to worship God.
We are a place of teaching. Pastor Dustin Woodward preaches a progressive message firmly grounded in the Bible and the teachings of Jesus.
We are a place of friends. We believe personal connection is one of the greatest ways to bring people to Christ, and because of that, we take time to socialize (even during our service).

We’re excited that this is getting so much publicity! This is exactly the reaction we were going for!

I know somebody mentioned it farther up, but check out what we’re all about at !

Thanks guys!

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

NLT: “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

Good to know that you think God’s Word and purpose needs a little help in the salvation department with some “relevancy” and crude slang references. Awesome. I’m sure He will be very grateful. ;)

FYI…they confirmed in an email that they did it all on purpose.

“We are aware of what WTF originally stands for, and that is actually why we chose it. It is something that our target audience is VERY familiar with. Why not use it? Because we don’t need more gimmicks in the church. And I don’t care what the banner says, WTF doesn’t stand for Worship Teaching and Friends, it stands for What the F*ck. It’s what I, and everyone else, reads right away.

I’ll give them credit for -trying- to be creative, but it’s just a fail, and a fail at the core of what they’ve created as their brand.

I think there are more important situations we could be posting over…like people being sold into the sex trade, the lady down the street not having enough food, or the teenager looking for love in the wrong places…not curse words and taboo phrasing. Yes, using curse word puns is a little juvenile, but for young people bitter towards Christians who are more concerned with good PR over good action to truly love those around them, this could even have been the first thing in years to have them even consider walking through church doors. I’m not saying this is the best thing, but I am asking is our heart and collective effort best used to spending time battling over this? Would Jesus waste His time on the pun, or would He focus on the young guy walking through the door?

Christ was accused of being a drunkard by the religious…because he drank. He was accused of being a glutton…because he ate. He was mocked by the religious and criticized by the church. Ministry tactics by the early church were “questionable” and “risque” in the opinion of most.

The “world” doesn’t own the letters. Let’s get their attention and bring them in. Props to the creator of this campaign.

Who even says that this website is the standard for how to market anything. If it works and it doesn’t kill anyone I say go for it. Notice I didn’t say offend. Hopefully this gets christians out of their comfort zones to realize that the church needs to be the driving force of what things mean instead of the world. I will add this because it’s basic marketing 101. Always get the .com. If it’s a .net don’t waste your time like I just did on here.
