Jesus Needs New PR

Do we need church, denominations, and religion to engage God?

Sinead O’Connor says no.

What do you think?

I think we need other believers, not sure it has to be a formal church/denomination.

she does raise a great point that Jesus (and the prophets) seemed anti-religion, but I’d say they were moreso against abusive religion and were for something far simpler.

I can definitely understand the point she tries to make that we don’t need religion, but it definitely helps navigate the infinite.

We need Christian community to grow. Communities need to define themselves and their boundaries for good and bad reasons. Denominations are the result of Christian communities defining themselves, unfortunately, defining themselves against other Christians.
I would disagree with O’Connor’s understanding of Jesus being against religion. Jesus went to the temple and did not turn over tables every time he was in the area. He went to the synagogue. He celebrated the Passover. He infused the Jewish faith with the Presence of God. I guess that is the question we need to ask ourselves in our churches, are we allowing God to infuse our practices and faith with His Presence?

“Church-less Christianity is like sex-less marriage—it can only last one generation.” Wish I could remember where I heard that, but it’s not something I came up with. It’s a quote that’s always stuck with me, because as much as I agree with her comments on failed religion, I don’t think the answer is no religion.

The consumer driven church needs to have religion, platform shows, liturgy and all that to survive. The church that loves others with its various giftings will be eternal.

Denominations are nothing more than folks that received some sort of revelation and blessing from God, and then put a period at then end of the sentence instead of a comma. God is always doing new things; emphasizing the needs of a generation, a people or a community.

Jesus said, I do what I see the Father doing. He implied that He did not do what he didn’t see the Father doing (empty religion).

We need others. We cannot be a body without them. We cannot be a family without some sort of interaction with our family.

I just went on the coolest men’s retreat I have ever been on. No conference speakers, talks on lust or pronography, or semi-coarse language to be more masculine – awesome.

You can read about it here: http://fireandgrace.blogspot.com/2010/09/5-12-reasons-to-go-on-retreat-or-make.html

Could someone explain to me what she means by that last comment, “the emperor has no clothes”?

Otherwise, this was very interesting to watch. I think she brings up several valid points and offers a great conversation topic to all Christians.
