Mark 2:16-17 (New Living Translation)

16 But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum?”

17 When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

Jesus dined with sinners. I doubt that he has any qualms with a parody video that encourages people who might not otherwise, to attend church!

Michael, nobody here thinks Jesus would care about this YouTube. We think it’s cheesy perhaps. But not sin. Or clever.

No need to judge with scripture.

    But thanks.

Why is this so horrible and offensive? It’s funny. It’s a cheap, homemade parody; not a Broadway production. I feel like they got the point across; I mean, you all now know that there will be “church four times” on Easter. Leave the poor little Florida church alone and let them do what they do. I’m down with a church that can laugh a little. I can’t help but like them more and more by the minute. :)

I’m with you, Jessica. Anyone can sit back and be a critic but these guys tried to do something fun. Sure, it was pro production quality, but hey, they’re not pro. It is overlong and underdeveloped but it was probably a lot of fun for members to watch and see people they knew in the video. And you’re right, the “4 times” theme was certainly communicated. So, good job, guys. I like to follow this blog and MPT, but plenty of people that comment here are just as guilty as conservative evangelicals when it comes to following the group norm; essentially by being too cool and dismissive.

inspiring actually. i think they’re ready to step it up a bit, and do a video to the SNL Justin Timberlake parody….only make it “jesus in a box”.

i love when wannabe rap “artists” become pastors instead. i mean, it’s such a fine line.

If I was choosing a church to goto for Easter and I saw this video, I would go the opposite direction of this church. In fact if my church ran this video, I would probably never admit I went there for fear I would be associated with it.

Yes, I think what would have helped this video is more timeliness. They TOTES should have gone for a Lady Gaga “Telephone” parody.

    Hello, hello, baby
I could not see you today
Not enough services in the church you say, say

I could write more, but I’ll wait 5 years to finish it, when people will be more nostalgic.

Okay. I have attended churches (one in particular) that do this video parody thing a lot. I laughed along with and at the cheeze factor for awhile. It was fun while it lasted…

And then I started adding up the cost of the equipment used to make said crappy entertainment (I mean evangelistic/church growth tools) and started seeing how “starring” in these videos was creating pastoral groupies (I mean faithful members) and how the pastors were becoming obsessed with things like hair and clothing and branding/image instead of people. And that led me to reflect on how several church members earning less than $25,000 a year were diligently and sacrificially tithing 10% of their hard earned incomes to support the InSync wannabes who were making around $75,000 a year to make cheesy videos and have meetings at Starbucks to brainstorm ways to be relevant. (Well, rumor has it… the real salaries cannot be spoken of. They are pasted on the wall in the Holy of Holies and I don’t want to risk death just to be sure… I do know that their yard work was done free of charge, the maintenance people were expected to provide free services to the staff and the pastors got free trips and cars every year around the holidays, in addition to sabbaticals from their videomaking and ministry rally planning.)

And after really thinking about the cost of these silly (I mean seeker-focused) videos, I did the only thing I could do. I haven’t been back and, frankly, I don’t miss the show. I don’t think I dare watch this video…PCSD and all that. ;-)

This church is only one good sex series away from being in the top ten most hated churches…. but seriously…. if you can’t laugh at someone making fun of themselves and trying to reach people then you have an issue… But maybe I have an issue and my issue is that it looks to me that You are getting popular by judging someone without knowing there heart or intention…. It is true that church marketing has an all to debatable context but come on…. I think my issue is I use to much punctuation and I ramble, and I should be working right now….. and I don’t know You and I am judging you for your website…. ah who cares…. hopefully someone saw the video, they went to church, got saved, God saved their marriage, and now will still struggle through trials in life but know that there is HOPE IN JESUS… Or maybe someone saw it and it turned them off to church even the more… God will be their and my Judge… :)
