For those (I suspect many) readers who aren’t aware, Peter is a respected UK journalist of long standing, who writes mainly on the social and political impact in the UK of declining moral standards, primarily as a result of the sidelining of God. You can read his blog at

He thought it would be “much more likely” that poetry (arts, beauty, but even the poetry of a life like M. Teresa?) would suddenly cause an educated athiest to reconsider rather than reasoned argument. I agree. May we all live lives of greater beauty because of Christ.

Thank you for posting this.
Interesting that he points to the end of WWI as the beginning of a post-Christian era in Great Britain. This is in keeping with the reaction that Lewis and Tolkien and their colleagues had to the war. The supplement videos in the expanded LOTR set goes into Tolkien’s experience of war as translated into the books (Google: Tolkien Great War to find material on this.)
In many respects, I see that we are still dealing with the effects of German Idealism that influenced so many of the ideologies that we still have with us today, and impacts the church as well.
This is truly a fascinating subject, as long as we can address it honestly and charitably.
