Our NPU Biblical and Theological Studies Dept was invited to attend the book launch for Frederica Mathewes-Green’s new book, First Fruits of Prayer. We were shuttled over to St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church where we were given some finger foods from various parts of the world, and then Frederica and a small band of singers went through the basic ideas of her book and then “chanted” them in Orthodox style. The music was repetitive, but because there was a rhythmical approach, that basic chorus stuck with all of us. It might be better to say it penetrated into us. Brad Nassif, our Orthodox colleague, explained how it all was designed. Informed us that he, too, was a cantor in his Orthodox church as a kid, and then proceeded (in our shuttle back) to sing a few verses of an uplifting Christmas Orthodox “canon” (set prayer).
