Why Do African-Americans Vote for Democrats?

posted by Robert Gelinas

Lisa Sharon-Harper has started quite a discussion over at Sojo.net with her article: A History Lesson for Herman Cain.

Every wonder why the majority of African-Americans are Democrats?  Why do African-Americans vote for Dems., even though President Lincoln was a Republican AND most African-Americans are socially conservative?

This is a key area for understanding in black/white relationships especially among Christians.  Lisa Sharon-Harper gives an historical perspective that is worth considering as we seek to build reconciling relationships.

Part of the confusion is the assumption that historical labels accurately reflect past philosophies and beliefs.

Heck, even so Republican a president as Ronald Reagan would be a target for hysterical scorn and hatred if the current Repubs were capable of looking at his record with honest, open eyes. (Shoot, that evil President actually RAISED taxes almost every year in office!)

The vast majority vote for the Democrats because they know they will get something for nothing. I would guess that in excess of 75% have no known father and from berth to death they live off the taxpayer. They receive no death benefits as I understand, a American-African I know was govin to a funeral and I ask who was dead, he stated a name and I said “But he died three weeks ago”. He replied “The Funeral Home will not bury them until they get the money”.
