Images of Women in Hijab for Target Practice

posted by Suzy Shuraym

This news story is so astonishing it’s hard to believe the whole thing really happened.

According to Kate Wiltrout, writing for The Virginian-Pilot, the United States Navy “will not use a target depicting a Muslim woman holding a gun at a new training range for SEALs in Virginia Beach”.

A woman in a hijab? Well, OK. SEALs have probably been shot at in Iraq or Afghanistan by women wearing headdresses, so that might be a legitimate practice target (among others).

But, as they say on the television infomercials, there’s more. On the wall behind the woman’s head were verses from the Qu’ran.

What idiot in the Department of Defense thought this target was a good idea?

It is not new to the people that US Seals/Army are fighting against terrorist most especially the Iraq’s and Afghan’s. But it is not acceptable enough to violet or disrespect the Muslims beliefs and custom. The Muslim women wearing a
hijab does not represent the terrorist, and this is not enough reason to make them a practice target.

Yet Another Taliban Atrocity
"Taliban" translates quite literally as "students", yet (as this latest atrocity confirms) the undeniably evil men who call themselves the Taliban are anything but seekers of knowledge. Murdering more than a hundred school kids in Pakistan? Really? "Their sole purpose, it seems, was to kill those

The Torture Report
As an American, it's painful to read the recently released Torture Report (United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence’s report on the CIA’s enhanced interrogation techniques). The only U.S. Senator who was tortured -- that would be John McCain -- has vociferously opposed the use of

Arrested for Driving While Female
Here we go again. Two women have been arrested in Saudi Arabia for the crime of driving. Seriously? Yeah: only in Saudi Arabia. But, why? We all know Saudi women (and girls) who have driven cars in the kingdom -- albeit on "private property". That is, the female offspring of royalty have be

Women at Work in Saudi Arabia
It has always seemed strange to me that many in the Muslim world continue to relegate half the population to the shadows. Yes, I'm talking about the role of women -- and that's especially true in places such as Saudi Arabia, "with rigid cultural attitudes and restrictions on women that include pr

The Pope: Violence in the Name of Islam
According to a report by Reuters, Pope Francis (the leader of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics) said yesterday (November 30, 2014) that equating Islam with violence was wrong and called on Muslim leaders to issue a global condemnation of terrorism to help dispel the stereotype. During a trip to Turkey
