You Raise Me Up – Josh Groban

YouTube Preview Image

Josh Groban is one of the top selling adult contemporary artists of the 2000s.  This inspiring song was his breakthrough hit.

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

There is no life – no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

This song is one I use often in Worship at our Church. The first verse reminds me of the earlier Psalms of David who cried out to God when ever he felt down and attacked by the devil. The chorus reminds me of Peter who Jesus raised out of the water when the stormy sea threatened to engulf him. When we sing ‘I am safe when I am on your shoulders’ I picture Jesus lovingly cradling a lamb on His shoulders. ‘You raise me up to more than I can be’ speaks of the awesome love of our Father God who’s Spirit within us empowers and equips us to be more than we could ever hope or dream. I love this song as it lifts my spirit to worship God.
