The actor best known for his performances as Hans Gruber in Die Hard and Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series passed away on January 14, 2016 after a battle with cancer.

Rickman’s other film roles included the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Jamie in Truly Madly, Deeply, Colonel Brandon in Ang Lee’s 1995 film Sense and Sensibility, Harry in Love Actually, P. L. O’Hara in An Awfully Big Adventure and Judge Turpin in the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In 1995, Rickman was awarded the Golden Globe, Emmy Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for his portrayl of Rasputin in Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny.

Rickman’s career is filled a wide variety of roles. His role in Die Hard earned him a spot on AFI’s 100 Years…100 Heroes & Villians as the 46th best villain in film history. But perhaps it’s his long stint as Severus Snape within the Harry Potter series that many will forever remember. Critics have raved about Rickman’s performance. Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times said Rickman “as always, makes the most lasting impression.”

Rickman met Rima Horton at the age of 19 and she became his first girlfriend. The couple lived together from 1977 until his death. The couple married in a private ceremony in New York City in 2012. Rickman will be truly missed by fans, friends and family.
