Did you guess the answer to this week’s Christian music trivia question:Q: In 1985, which Christian rock act’s video was banned from MTV for allegedly being too violent? The answer is …DeGarmo and Key.Eddie DeGarmo and Dana Key were at the forefront of Christian rock in the 70s and 80s (and would later go on to found Forefront Records). While still in high school, the pair formed the band Globe, which was signed to Hi Records, a subisidiary of London Records. In 1972, Eddie DeGarmo attended a show by early Christian artist Dallas Holm, responded to an altar call and committing his life to following Jesus. Eventually Dana Key followed his friend into the Christian faith and the two decided to leave the music business. But after hearing Larry Norman’s music the pair realized they could couple their evangelistic hearts with their love for music, and formed one of Christian music’s early rock acts, signing first with Pat Boone’s Lamb and Lion label before moving to the Benson imprint, Power Disks. In 1985, the video for their single, “666,” from their album Take The Pledge, was banned from MTV for allegedly being too violent for a scene depicting a man on fire (although there are those who say the video was banned for it’s blatant Christian content.)Today, Eddie DeGarmo is the president of EMI GMG Publishing and Dana Key is at the helm of Ardent Records, the label he founded with John Fry.By today’s standards, DeGarmo and Key’s “666” video is tame and a bit cheesy. But you be the judge:
