The Star-Spangled Banner! This is how it’s supposed to be sung!

Once upon a time, a rather average American sat in the hold of a British prison ship in Baltimore harbor. The War of 1812 wasn’t going all that well for our young nation. Francis Scott Key fretted through the long night — had the English bombardment forced Fort McHenry to surrender? Had they hauled down the Stars and Stripes?

He scrawled his thoughts on a piece of paper — straining to see through the dawn’s early light.

Here is Whitney Houston proclaiming what made his heart jump with joy: The flag was still there!

The national anthem should be sung with a brisk and lively tempo that symbolizes the strength and resolve of the nation, and never in a mawkish and overly sentimental manner.

This is NOT how the national anthem should be sung. The national anthem is not a song to be performed, but something to be presented. Too many entertainers feel that “interpreting” should be an opportunity for them to showcase their alleged talents. Take a look at the pitiful performance by Christina Aguilera at the 2011 Superbowl. Yodeling the lyrics like so many of today’s pop singers and worse, forgetting the lyrics. It was embarrassing for her and for anyone forced to listen.
