Voice of the Day: Declaration of Independence

But, when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.
– Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.

Sojourners quotes from a document used to justify war. Once again, it shows it does not support the gospel of the Prince of Peace.

Yeah, I’m with Bill. One need not be a total pacifist to realize that the American Revolution involved a rebellion against a legitimate, established governmental authority–something which is directly contrary to Biblical instruction. (It’s weird to think of myself as a Loyalist in the War for Independence.) So it’s difficult to discern “God’s Politics” in the Declaration of Independence.

What about Aquinas (I think it was) Ghandi and MLK who said that an unjust law (society or ruler) is not a law at all. In fact, it is our duty NOT to obey it?
Doesn’t that justify conflict?
