Verse of the Day: ‘Do justice’

posted by jmcgee

[God] has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Isn t it ironic that while many of us Evangelicals bitterly oppose scientific Darwinism we embrace Social Darwinism? Evolutionary Darwinism speaks of the survival of the fittest , nature red in tooth and claw : Social Darwinism says Every man for himself, and Devil take the hindmost. The Torah, the LORD s Constitution for Israel commands Justice, as in Exodus 22:21 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger illegal alien nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. 22 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 23 If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto Me, I will surely hear their cry; 24 And My Wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. 25 If thou lend money to any of My People that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. 26 If thou at all take thy neighbour s raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down: 27 For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am Gracious. This is Law, and we are under Grace; but we know that the Law shows us God s heart and mind. Should we not not be overwhelmingly Gracious? What I hear from many Evangelicals is Social welfare, Charity’ compare 1st Corinthians 13, where we originally got the word ‘is the responsibility of the individual. Or of the churches. If we believed this, the churches in every town would long since have all gotten together and said OK, we at First Church will take the 4th and 5th Wards, since we re a wealthy church, and you at Elm St Anabaptist can take the 2nd Ward: which of you other congregations are going to take on the 1st and 3rd Wards? In Jesus Name we re going to end poverty and ignorance and disease and oppression in this town! That is We re going to put our money where our mouths are! It d be worth the try. Or are poverty and disease and the others such huge problems that they re beyond such efforts? Maybe we d be justified in falling back on the United States Constitution? We the people of the United States, in order to promote the general welfare do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. This is where we get the word welfare . Am I not my brother s keeper? Who isn t my neighbor?>

Enough with this gender-neutered PC biblical revisionism! “O mortal” is almost as pathetic as the “Our Father/Mother” prayer and reference to Jesus as God’s “offspring” at the Oregon Center for Christian Values summit in Portland last weekend.>

I hear the word “justice” thrown around a lot, but in my reading and experience its usually used as a word with a good connotation, but it lacks a specific meaning. At least the way I hear it used. One of my favorite passages concerning justice, though not using the word, is Ezekiel 13:19 where God asks “And will you profane Me among My people… killing people who should not die, and keeping people alive who should not live…?” This passage has me considering dropping the label “pro-life” and instead using the label “anti-profanity” since there are a lot of Catholics and the like who define pro-life as meaning not just anti-abortion but anti-death penalty as well.>

I have been reading a praying to the lord to send someone who loves God and want to do his will. We have many politicians who make promises but don’t keep them. Why I Work for Immigration Reform (by Patty Kupfer)
When I tell people that I work on immigration reform, they usually laugh or say, "way to pick an easy topic." Everyday it feels like there is more fear, more hate. Raids are picking up in Nevada, California, and New York. A number of senators who supported comprehensive reform only a few months ago

Verse of the Day: 'peace to the far and the near'
I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will lead them and repay them with comfort, creating for their mourners the fruit of the lips. Peace, peace, to the far and the near, says the Lord; and I will heal them. But the wicked are like the tossing sea that cannot keep still; its waters toss u
