Why are experts the last to see what God spells out so clearly? A household or nation that spends twice as much as it brings in leads to ruin.

Improper Planning Leads to Poverty

Proverbs 21:5 – The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.

Ignoring Instructions Leads to Shame

Proverbs 13:18 – He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored

So, we ignored discipline and are now shamed by a credit downgrade. Surprise.

When I first preached the series Godonomics back in October of 2009, I warned in the message “What would God say to FDR?” that history is cyclical. I warned that bailouts, excessive borrowing and greed (in wall street, on main street, and by BOTH democrats and republicans) would lead to a “sugar high” recovery followed by a drop. I showed the true history of the American depression that turned into the Great Depression after excessive spending, borrowing, and inflating led to a two year high followed by drop and stagnation. Hmmmm? October 2009 is almost two years ago. Look at the headlines: Another one.
I warned of three illusions that overtake the human heart.

One is the illusion of greed. There are many faces to greed. Jesus warned us to look out for the many faces of greed. It’s easy to see others’ greed, but rarely your own. As we look at the sell off of our retirement, there is lots of blame to go around. This drop and future economic problems that are coming is predictable. Why? We’ve built our economy on greed. On meism. On selfish consumption. We can blame corporations, unions, or government, but let’s look in the mirror. Can I recognize the unique face of greed that has infected me? Can you? Has money become our god? Is our instinct to think about helping others or upgrading? Is our security in God or riches? As long as money is our inner center, we will live in constant fear.

Here is a radio interview from last year where I explained godonomics as well as called the “recovery” of the past 12 months a sugar high.
