I had lunch at a really sweet cafe yesterday. The food was great, service fast and friendly. The place was pretty crowded, though, as others must have agreed that it was great. So we had to sit fairly close to another table. We sat next to two businessmen; it was like we were at the same table it was so close. It was impossible to not overhear their conversation.

As we were eating our salads, the two guys were talking about health. One guy was saying that he had been dieting, and had lost a few pounds. I was quite interested, but out of respect I didn’t lean over and jump into the chat.

They were ahead of us in their meal. As they continued to talk about eating more vegetables and cutting cholesterol, their dessert arrived! Two giant slabs of layered cream fudge cake. The conversation about health didn’t skip a beat.

“Yes, it’s really important to watch fats and calories. You don’t want to have much of them, it clogs your arteries,” as the dude chowed down on fat layered upon fat. “Yup, gotta stay out of the hospital,” the middle-management looking friend chimed. As he chomped gulps of cake. They continued unabated, one about his mother who had dropped dead of a heart-attack a few years ago. The other claiming he had dropped one shirt size once while dieting. It was too surreal. They weren’t kidding, or laughing, or saying anything about the disconnect between behavior and concept. Not a word about their health, or about overeating.

Their good intentions mixed with high-fat behavior sure helped me. I completely avoided the immense refrigerator case of desserts. Nothing looked good, after that weird scene!
