Americans are eating about the same amount of vegetables and fruits that we did 10 years ago, according to a new study from the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention).  Other than the state of Idaho, the rest of the country stayed the same, or slightly decreased consumption of healthy living produce.

Despite a huge push by the physicians, dieticians and the media (including this daily columnist!), we’re just not eating the recommended amounts of at lease three servings of vegetables and two fruits a day.  We are particularly short on fruit.

No wonder we are a nation that is obese and overweight.  We are eating way too much highly fattening food.  We are consuming food that is so nutritious (and high calorie), and not using those calories through exercise and movement, that we’re constantly storing surplus.

Let’s try again.  Have a sautéed vegetable sandwich for lunch or dinner today, instead of a burger, or cold-cut meats.  Have a vegetable casserole, or sautéed veggies over a small servings of rice for dinner.

For a snack this afternoon, or tonight, have applesauce, raisins or an amazing nectarine or ripe pear.
