It amazes me that terrorist suspect, Faisal Shahzad, and other terrorists can ever claim that they are “spiritual” or “religious.”  How can someone who proclaims to love God even think of bombs, inciting terror, killing people and destroying themselves in the process?

What is spiritual or religious about destruction and murder?  I have always been taught to believe and act that life is a great gift from God.   We are to love one another, be stewards and protect the earth, and treat each other with respect and kindness, as we would like to be treated – that’s what I have always learned.

I’ve done a lot of study and research into Scriptures from various religions and traditions.  Yes, there are many sections that encourage people to fight for causes.  It’s true that not all spiritual and religious teachings are about peace and love.  Without going into specifics, I find that if a particular tract is interpreted as a license for murder and destruction, then it’s misinterpreted.

I pray for terrorists and those who teach terrorism.  I pray that they will recover from their insanity and truly become spiritual, worshiping God and life as gifts and something to protect, not something to destroy.

What are YOUR thoughts and learning about terrorism and destructive acts in the name of God?  What does being “spiritual” mean to YOU in this context?  Please comment below.
