If you are like me and most people I know who have weight challenges, the last thing we need are appetizers, as our appetites are already quite fine, thanks!

This being the 44th day of the “Give-Back Diet,” I’m getting into specifics.  If you’re trying to lose weight, it’s an obvious thing to forget the appetizers when dining, either at home or out.

Appetizers often carry lots of calories.  They may appear smaller, but they’re really the same thing as an entré, or a heavy-laden side.

If, on the other-hand you want a first course, try something that’s healthy such as a small salad, or some special lower-fat, less-caloric choice.  Instead of something fried or cheesy, try marinated vegetables: tomatoes with a little balsamic vinegar, or picked-vegetables, such as Kim Chee. If it’s something sweet you crave, try apple slices, or dried fruit (not the candied variety).

ACTION PLAN:

— skip the appetizer today.  Drink a glass of water, or have some hot tea before the meal, or try some of the items I mentioned above.

— if you are dining out, ask the wait-person to not bring you the bread basket or butter.  Skipping those items can really save you a lot of calories.

— Quantify the savings in money, and in calories, and be sure to keep track of it in your “Give-Back Diet” journal.  Congratulate yourself, too, for saving.

— As always, before the meal take a moment to say a prayer and be thankful.

Please POST some very healthy appetizer recipes of your own.  I’ll select one or two, and feature them in a coming column!
