This is strange, but true.  The more you eat, the more you want, the more you end-up eating!

Why do you think they call them “appetizers?”  Extra food sparks your appetite.  They make you have an increased “appetite” or make you hungrier.

In French, they’re called, Hors d’œuvre, or “outside the work.”  This means a small food, or finger-food that is before the meal, or outside the main effort of cooking.  They are actually not part of a meal, but are extras.

In Italian, they’re antipasto, or “before the meal.”  Often cold cuts, cheese, or pickled vegetables, again, they are not the meal.

In Mediterranian cuisine, call them Meze.  In Chinese, “cold plate.”  In Japanese, Zensai, or “before the vegetable.”

As a recovered compulsive overeater, I don’t need appetizers or Hors d’œuvre to spark my appetite.  I’m always ready to eat!  Having them just makes me want more food, then more and more.

I think that eating more makes you want more because the stomach gets bigger and stretched and needs more to feel full.  I also think the body quickly acclimates to more food, and it’s a natural process in our culture to store more food energy than we need.

Think twice before you have appetizers if you’re trying to lose weight.  Remember, less is more.
