The goddess says, “I come from inside you”

Athena of Mycenae in National Archaeological Museum, Athens

Lin’s intention was to meet her spiritual teacher. In her dream, as she reported it to me:

I go to the cemetery where my brother is buried. We meet and hug each other. It’s very loving. He wants to come with me but I tell him I can’t take him where I am going.

A great bear appears. Bear has been my friend, and I feel safe and protected., even when something weird happens.

Something like smoke is coming out of my solar plexus. I look at it, trying to figure out what’s going on. It takes the form of a woman, a kind of misty ghost. “Who are you?” I want to know. “Tell me your name.”  She tells me her name is Athena. “Get out of here. You can’t be Athena. You can’t be my guide, anyway. My guide can’t come from inside me. You have to be separate.”

She corrects me. She says firmly, “I can come from inside you.” I’m still disbelieving until she tells me to look down. I see my brother’s tombstone. The inscription reads: To thine own self be true.

Asked how she felt afterwards, Lin said, “I was shocked awake.” True spiritual teachers like to do that: to shock us awake. Asked to describe Athena, Lin said, “She is a goddess of wisdom.”  She decided that the dream message was: “I can birth wisdom from inside myself, and I don’t need to look outside myself for my guide.”

Lin’s dream encounter was fresh and personal. She also felt grounded in family and ancestral traditions, blessed to have met both her deceased brother, and an animal guardian, and a goddess with a great name who was yet no stranger, given form by her own energy and imagination.

Advice from a dead movie star created the star of "I Love Lucy"
On the day the Obama administration announced that it intended to seek to reopen diplomatic relations with Cuba, a friend reported dreaming of Lucille Ball, the star of "I Love Lucy." She wanted to know why she was dreaming of the star of "I Love Lucy". I commented that the dream seemed to me to be

The departed are dreaming with us
One of my driving purposes in writing The Dreamer’s Book of the Dead was to help  some of the many people in our society who are hungry for confirmation that communication with the departed is not “weird” or “unnatural”, let alone impossible, and that it is possible to extend love and for

Dream dates: Sir Christopher Wren dreams a cure
An intriguing account by John Aubrey of how the celebrated architect who recreated St.Paul's after the Great Fire of London dreamed a simple cure for a kidney ailment. I'll leave the narrative in Aubrey's voice. Note that "reins" in late 17th century English (as in modern French) means "kidneys".

The origin and power of the shaman's drum
The shaman’s primary tool for journeying is the single-headed frame drum, the type we use in Active Dreaming circles. I am constantly astonished, though no longer surprised, by how quickly this ancient instrument can help even the most rational, cognicentric Westerner to enter another state of bei

Thanksgiving and affirming
I am in favor of affirmations. At a certain period in my life, I did not think much of selp-help gurus who were pushing them. I still have major reservations about affirmations that seem to be pitched from the head instead of the heart, and either project ego-driven "gimme" agendas or , alternativel
