Gaudete! And let’s break out a carol or two…

“Gesu Bambino,” anyone? This is one of my favorites, and nobody does it better than these gals: Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Staade. Enjoy.

Gaudete! I was at a Russian Orthodox parish this week on the feast of St. Nicholas, their parish feast day, and after Divine Liturgy one of the pieces sung as we were venerating the icons was “Veni, veni, Emmanuel” with its chorus of “Gaude, gaude, Emmanuel, Nascetur pro te, Israel.” I’ve never heard them sing anything else in Latin (why would they?) but I find it interesting they sing this on hymn in Latin at this time of year, which they did also in past years.
Flicka von Staade is a member of the Latin Church I’m part of. We don’t see much of her, but in her limited time here she’s a terrific supporter of music programs for all children.
