The Archbishop and his deacons. Read more about Dolan here.

And there’s this stellar quote, from Deacon Bill Ditewig:

I often tell the true story of a bishop who, while literally standing in the middle of his deacons, said, “When I ordained you as deacons, I ordained you to share with me the burdens on my heart for the people who live in this diocese; today I want to share what’s on my heart, so it can be on yours as well.” I’ve always remembered that, because it seemed to me that this bishop truly captured the relationship that should exist.

That’s hazardously close to the victory sign flashed by Nixon on the way out……

Why does that picture make me think of Dan Quale accepting the vice-presidential nomination?

On the internet see: “What is he thinking” by RealCatholicTV. Short video
of Abp Dolan when talking about God on National TV. “….some call him or her or whatever you want somebody beyond us is in charge.”

The Archbishop’s comment was very encouraging to me. First of all he was in the physical midst of his Deacons and secondly he wanted to communicate his heart and his prayer needs to them. Nothing is more intimate than praying with someone, especially your spiritual leader. During my six years of formation and the years after ordination, my Bishop never personally talked to me about any subject. I was ordained without him ever knowing what was in my heart or mind. So I see Archbishop’s Dolan’s verbal comments as a real plus. Every Bishop has a different personality and style.and I think that Archbishop’s Dolan’s style is commendable and a goal for every other non-verbal Bishop to aspire to achieve as well. Bishops talk clerical oneness with their Priests and Deacons but I see a great disparity between their relationships with the two groups. Maybe in 25 or 100 years the ground will be more equal for Deacons than it is now. Deacons do servanthood very well but some Bishops need to do clerical respect better than they are currently, that is if they consider Deacons as clergy at all or just as glorified altar servers. Thank you Archbishop Dolan for hanging out with your Deacons.
