God in the details: why we love Conan

This ad for American Express is clever, artful, lavish — and hilarious. I can’t believe he did this.

It’s a great ad — really creative. Nice to see.
The ad budget is the ad budget, whether Conan does it or whether it’s an animated silent ad involving no celebrities at all. The more successful the ad, the more likely future ad budgets will be as big or bigger in the future.
When you see an ad, you see a product — a product that created jobs for a large number of people.
It’s easy to take pot-shots at celebrities and their wealth, but the reality is they are cottage industries unto themselves. They generate wealth for others as well as for themselves, much like corporations — they generate wealth in order to profit, but they employ large numbers of people in the process.

Conan’s ability to make himself larger than life is played out here- as well as his dedication to his craft. I think it’s a great ad for him to be in.
God in the details though? Not sure how that fits..

Big day in the Big Easy: 10 new deacons
Deacon Mike Talbot has the scoop: 10 men today were ordained as Permanent Deacons for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. This group of men was formally selected on the day the evacuation of New Orleans began as Hurricane Katrina approached. The immediate aftermath of the storm for this class would be

"Gesu Bambino," anyone? This is one of my favorites, and nobody does it better than these gals: Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Staade. Enjoy.
