The Deacon's Bench

Making a list, checking it twice

posted by jmcgee

It’s a little early for Christmas, but some people are indeed making lists — and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that The Bench has just landed on this one: the Top 50 Catholic Blogs.

There are some familiar names, and some that were new to me. (A lotta blogging nuns out there! Who knew?) It’s a lively and varied bunch, and if you’re looking for some fresh bloggery to read in your spare time, you’ll want to check it out.

Apparently Mark Shea’s on there twice (once as Mark Shea, NCR, once as Catholic and Enjoying It!)
I mean he’s good, but the CAEI blog links to the NCR stuff…Just a quibble though, no real issue with the rest of the list.
Congrats on making the list, Deacon.

1. “Sister Mary Martha” isn’t a real nun. I wish people would wise up to that. That blog, though seemingly well-researched, is written by a lay person, a female comedic writer. If you read close enough, it should be glaringly obvious that the author is not a nun, nor always giving Catholic teaching/advice that is “by the book.”
2. That description of Faith & Family Live! is hilarious. And then to add Danielle Bean’s blog onto the list is overkill – her blog is hardly a top blog out there. Whoever put that list together is operating as if it’s 4 or 5 years ago. Things have changed.
Deacon, I’m glad you made the list. But alot of those blogs on that list I have never heard of, and I’m out here reading Catholic blogs night and day.

Meet Montana's married priest
Earlier this week, I posted an item about Montana getting its first married priest. Now a local TV station has hopped on the bandwagon. Take a look, below.

Big day in the Big Easy: 10 new deacons
Deacon Mike Talbot has the scoop: 10 men today were ordained as Permanent Deacons for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. This group of men was formally selected on the day the evacuation of New Orleans began as Hurricane Katrina approached. The immediate aftermath of the storm for this class would be

Gaudete! And let's break out a carol or two...
"Gesu Bambino," anyone? This is one of my favorites, and nobody does it better than these gals: Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Staade. Enjoy.
