The Deacon's Bench

The Deacon's Bench

“Where the streets have no name…”

Ahead of the anniversary of 9/11, this remains one of the most powerful tributes. It never fails to move me, no matter how many times I’ve seen it:. the stunning performance by Bono and U2 at the 2002 Super Bowl in New Orleans. Listen closely near the beginning and you’ll hear Bono say, “Lord, open my lips, that my mouth may proclaim your praise…”

He makes this a kind of Morning Prayer, a canticle to loss, and hope. You can find more about the song here. But watch and listen and remember and weep.

As you know (but some readers may not), the prayer that Bono recited is almost or exactly the same as the one said at the opening of the Liturgy of the Hours in Roman Catholic prayer. It is also used in the Episcopal counterpart of the Hours, called the Daily Office, and almost surely is used in Bono’s Anglican Church of Ireland.
