The Deacon's Bench

The Deacon's Bench

Happy birthday, Mary

Mary Birth-Murillo.jpg

Father of mercy,

give your people help and strength from heaven.

The birth of the Virgin Mary’s Son
was the dawn of our salvation.

May this celebration of her birthday

bring us closer to lasting peace.

Grant this though our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,

who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

— Collect for the Feast of the Birth of Mary, September 8.

I have a great affection toward “Lady Miryam of Nazareth” but I find most traditional art-work which tries to depict her as far too annoying.
She was not an “Anglo” but a “Semite” with brown complexion. Her hair was not blonde but probably black and her age at the time of Jesus’ birth was likely between 14-15.
Olivia Hussey — the actress who portrayed her in the JESUS OF NAZARETH films — did a good job here.
Another person who is sensitive to Lady Miryam’s cultural heritage is an artist out of Indiana. I have included his web-site in this post. Look up on that web-site his artistic piece entitled “Magnificat.”

isn’t it weird and a strange coincidence that this week we have so many religious feasts/holidays occur one day after the other?
Sept.6,2010 (Mon.)= Labor Day (US,Canada holiday)
Sept.8,2010 (Wed.)= the Birth of Mary, mother of Jesus (Catholic)
Sept.9,2010 (Thurs.)= Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year)
Sept.10,2010 (Fri.)= end of Ramadan (Islamic/Muslim holiday)
Sept.11,2010 (Sat.)= 9th anniversary of 9/11/2001.
its just a strange convergence of dates.
G=D bless us one and all.

Happy Birthday Mama Mary. Sorry I forgot to attend mass because of work. But you are remembered dearly.
