The Deacon's Bench

The Deacon's Bench

What can you do with old pews?

How about sell ’em on eBay?

One church set out to do that — but then came up with a better idea.  Check this out, below.

You can read more about it here.

Tomorrow morning, I am taking my two local grandsons, and a brother-in-law visiting from Oregon, and we are going on a day-trip to the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton Ohio.
Back in the corner of their Hangar Nine, very near where President Kennedy’s Air Force One (SAM 26000)is on display for folks to walk through, sits two beautiful blond-oak church pews. They act as contemplation points for folks to sit and consider the events of November 1963.
They originally were purchased by the Air Force for one of the three chapels on the base. When that chapel was closed and consolidated with the other two, the pews were just sitting out in the yard ready to be disposed. A very sharp eyed general spotted them and promptly had them removed from the yard (and thus from the garbage dump) and sent them to the Museum.
These two, the better ones, still serve — in silent watch — in place right under SAM 26000. No doubt, there have been plenty of fallen tears which touch that sacred wood. BTW: their carved crosses on the pew ends are still in place.
