Becoming a father to a Father

posted by jmcgee

Anyone who has ever had a son or daughter enter religious life will appreciate this heartfelt essay by Peter Finney, Jr., describing the emotions of watching his son grow up to become a priest:

Look for me in the first pew at St. Louis Cathedral…I’ll be the one being propped up by my wife, who has prayed for this day since our kids were little. She will be smiling and crying. Me? I’ll have to borrow some of the archbishop’s incense for smelling salts.

Read on. It’s sweet and wonderful.

I new Peter Finney’s Dad in New Orleans when he came into my office of the American Express. He was such a kind gentlemen, so quiet spoken and with great manners. Peter, Jr. had to grow up to be just like his Dad and it seems like Peter, Jr’s son is just like his Dad and Grandfather. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

I know just how he feels. My son was ordained in the past few years and its an emotional whirlwind to see your little (well, once upon a timne litte) boy up there in vestments consecrating the Eucharist. And imageine, just IMAGINE being the deacon assisting your priest-son and I dare ANYONE to get through THAT experience without a waterfall of tears.
