Shepherd of note: a singing bishop

posted by jmcgee

Yes! Can someone say “Amen!”?

This just made me smile: a video of the newly installed bishop of Springfield concluding his homily with a song from one of the Backstreet Boys.

Yes. Really.

You can read about him here. But watch the video for yourself.

I’m not sure how many of you realize just how amazing it is that he carried that off — solo, and a capella. Gave me an anxiety attack just to watch it!!!

Lots of bishops seem to be possessed of great voices.
Archbishop John Nienstedt of St. Paul and Minneapolis and Bishop Peter Christianson of Superior, Wisc. are two more.
Maybe they should reserve an concert hall for them at the next bishops’ meeting and charge admission!

Very sweet, unassuming and pastoral. Just what we need in our bishops!

Appropriate for confirmations perhaps but I am perplexed as to how this performance would appeal to anyone over the age of 20? Oh well! My prayer for this Shepherd of the Faith is that he exhibit on occasion an appreciation for “Bach” as in Johan Sebastian as well as “Back” as in the Backstreet Boys.

Big day in the Big Easy: 10 new deacons

"Gesu Bambino," anyone? This is one of my favorites, and nobody does it better than these gals: Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Staade. Enjoy.
