The Deacon's Bench

The Deacon's Bench

Quote of the day, Bulwer-Lytton edition

“For the first month of Ricardo and Felicity’s affair, they greeted one another at every stolen rendezvous with a kiss–a lengthy, ravenous kiss, Ricardo lapping and sucking at Felicity’s mouth as if she were a giant cage-mounted water bottle and he were the world’s thirstiest gerbil.”

Molly Ringle, Seattle, WA,
winner of the 2010 Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest for worst first sentence of a novel.

OMG! I love it. As a former English major myself, I have to admit, I find this winning entry, a masterpiece of rhetorical complexity, poor taste and hyperbole. If you have never read an Edward Bulwer-Lyton novel (he of “It was a dark and stormy night…” fame) I suggest you try one. He is also famous for coining a number of common phrases, such as “the pen is mightier than the sword”. He had quite an effect on our culture. My favorite novel of his is “The Last Days of Pompeii.” Thanks for sharing this, Greg!

I’ve started a blog devoted to writing Bulmer-Lytton writing. I’m going to write first sentences for a year and work with blog followers on crafting the best worst first sentences.
