The Deacon's Bench

The Deacon's Bench

How is baseball like the priesthood?

Minor-league star-turned-future-seminarian Grant Desme should know.

We were able to get a quick phone interview with him the other day. He’s sort of quiet, probably a little shy, but he has some reflections on his vocation — and peoples’ reaction to it — that are worth hearing.
Check it out here.

One of the very best sermon I ever heard a church administrator give was about how Coach Charlie Brown is like a pastor and his team is like the Church. Charles Schulz even worked this theme a few times.
I have done whole Lenten Spirituality programs on baseball and basketball. They were well received, especially here in the land of baseball Spring Training.
The question I have is, Charlie Brown aside, what position is most like a person’s ministry? It changes for each pastor and congregation.
