And it’s in Charleston:

Pope Benedict XVI has elevated the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart to the status of a minor basilica of the Catholic Church.

The Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is the 63rd minor basilica in the U.S.. Minor Basilicas enjoy special rights and privileges. There are only four major basilicas in the world and all of those are located in Rome.

“I am very pleased for Monsignor Sadie and all of the wonderful people of the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Charleston,” said Bishop Bransfield. He also added that this is a beautiful gift for the parish.

“Having a minor basilica here distinguishes the Charleston community as well as the entire Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston,” thanked Bransfield.

“Sacred Heart parishioners and I are grateful to Pope Benedict XVI and senior leaders of the universal church for this recognition of Sacred Heart Church as a minor basilica in the worldwide Catholic Church,” said rector of the basilica, Msgr. P. Edward Sadie.
